I'd throw as assert in myself (or a custom error routine - cue standard
discussion about whether assert is wonderful or evil). This is the sort
of thing that should never happen, so rather than ignoring it silently
(passing by the macro issues) it indicates a programming error elsewhere
in your code so I'd want to fail as noisily as possible - certainly when
developing and testing.
