size_t is an implementation-defined unsigned integer type. It's
defined via a typedef, which creates an alias for an existing type,
not a new type. It could in principle be *any* unsigned integer
type; in practice, it's usually either unsigned int or unsigned long.
It needs to be wide enough to hold the size in bytes of any possible
object. (Conceivably an implementation *might* permit objects bigger
than SIZE_MAX bytes; in practice, any sane implementation will make
size_t wide enough to hold the size of any object it can support.)
