The declaration I was referring to was the one for ent. I like the fact
that you can declare variables that are really only used in a for loop
to be declared there (see below).

So I meant writing
for (edict_t *ent = master; ent; ent = ent->chain)
count++;
But this should be a function, surely? There may be only one place
where you want to know the length of a chain, but I'd still probably
make it a function.
