No one would use any configuration system if they could assume all of those, so it's what you go on to say that is more significant: > Alternatively pcc64.c can be compiled with any 64-bit C compiler: I've > built and run it these compilers just now (I thought I'd been and done > with this palaver, but one last time): > > bcc Windows 64-bit x64 as above > Tiny C Windows 64-bit x64 > gcc Windows 64-bit x64 > MSVC Windows 64-bit x64cc > Pelles C Windows 64-bit x64 > > gcc Linux 64-bit x64 > > DMC Windows 32-bit x86 pcc32.c (no 64-bit version) > lccwin Windows 32-bit x86 pcc32.c (64-bit version doesn't run) > gcc Linux 32-bit ARM pcc32.c (no 64-bit ARM machine to hand) > > Now look inside the source to see how many #ifdefs there are to make > this possible. It's an odd comparison. First off, pcc64.c does not look like source code -- it looks like the output of some other program so the construction of the executable from editable sources is not quite as simple as you are suggesting. There is at least one more stage. But more significantly, the program is probably not highly system dependent, whereas I think the project you originally picked is. Surely an example of "how it should be done" should be doing the same "it"? -- Ben.
