The "it's not a function call" argument has never really stacked up for me. I know it's not a function call, but neither are 'if' or 'for' and try writing those without them. On the other hand, 'exit' is about as close to return as you can get (from main anyway) and yet does need them. The argument that works for me is "you don't need them, they don't add anything to readability, so why put them in?".
