I think that any interpretation of "whatever they please" that doesn't connect to the concept of pleasure is somewhat odd, but it's not really a problem for what I was saying. The key point of what I wrote was that "whatever they please" is different from "what they thought was best"; the details of how they differ are less important than the fact of a difference. It's not exactly an unusual thing for people to have the will, desire, inclination or disposition to do something other than what they think is best. It's not even usual for people to actually choose to do something other than what they think best.
