What? This is an incredibly weak argument.
If someone thought that `return` was a function, then why
wouldn't they think that `if` or `while` were also functions?
Or `sizeof`, and so on?

I would think that code is bad, and unnecessarily obscure, but
perhaps someone _would_ write this code.
struct v {
int retval;
};
struct v a;
int
something(void)
{
struct v b;
b.retval = 1;
return (a=b).retval;
}
Of course, it would make no difference if the `return` statement
were written as,
return ((a=b).retval);
But again, the whole premise (that a programmer familiar with C
would ever think that `return` is a function) is silly.
