"using namespace" should only ever be used at function local scope or to inject a namespace into another explict namespace (i.e. *not* global scope). /Flibble

The C++ Coding Guidelines encourage to use "using namespace std" because the guidelines assume, that developers are familiar with the names under std::. And the reasons you give are pure pseudo-reasons to dictate your personal taste - because you and others have a mental problem to tend to a feeling of uncertainty.

The whole point of having standard library names in the "std::" namespace is that new versions of C++ can have more functions, classes and other identifiers added to /their/ namespace without conflicting with user code. This means you could have written some code that was tested with C++14, and had your own class "optional". When C++17 came out, people could compile it with a C++17 compiler without conflict - because the new standard library "optional" class is in the "std::" namespace and there is no conflict. This is what allows the C++ standards folk to introduce new identifiers with convenient names, without reserving wide ranges of identifiers or using obscure and unpronounceable names as must be done in the C standards. A global "using namespace std;" defeats that - it is shooting yourself in the foot and guaranteeing that your code will bit-rot and be unusable in the future, for no benefit. As far as I can see, "using namespace std;" at file scope has only one good use - for converting old pre-"std::" code to work with newer standards with minimal textual changes. For your own code, you can write things any way you want. For code to be shown to or used by others, you should write in the clearest and most portable way you can - and that includes portable across time and standards versions, and being explicit about namespaces.

Elsewhere, the guidelines regularly use fully qualified names (like "std::vector"). Another note about the examples, a few lines above this quotation, says explicitly "Examples are not intended to be production quality".
