But a condvar mostly waits inside the kernel. Huh? You are missing the fact that there is an algorihtm that can turn a lock-free stack into something that can wait in the kernel when it needs to for the push/pop functions. It can be a futex, but there is another one out there...

Lock-free algorithms never wait inside the kernel !

That depends on what you need to do. Its fairly simple to have multiple processes using shared memory with mutexes controlling access. Posix threads have the PTHREAD_PROCESS_SHARED flag which allows mutexes to work between seperate processes. Naturally the C++ threading implementation doesn't (among a log of other useful features its missing) because it has to be lowest common denominator functionality - ie Windows.

It's less simple than with MT because the memory-contents have to be position-independent since you can't guarantee that mappings are placed at the same address in all participating processes. > Posix threads have the PTHREAD_PROCESS_SHARED flag which allows mutexes > to work between seperate processes. ... C++ mutexes implement everything that is needed.

You absolutely can guarantee it otherwise it wouldn't be any use. Clearly you don't understand how shared memory works on unix. >> Posix threads have the PTHREAD_PROCESS_SHARED flag which allows mutexes >> to work between seperate processes. ... > >But robust mutexes are siginficantly slower. No they don't. The C++ threading model is threading-lite. It doesn't even implement 3 level locking FFS which means 1 -> N publish subscribe models can't be used efficiently.

Of course shared memory is also useful when it isn't mapped to the same addrress. >> But robust mutexes are siginficantly slower. > Probably. But usually they're used alone when there's no contention when also employing a CV. A mutex plus a CV is almost the fastest producer-consumer-mechanism (monitor-objects are the fastest).

Then you simply could fire a thread with >thread( func, params ... ).detach() and forget the thread. What a pity I can't find some ascii art of someone with their head in their hands. You just Don't Get It despite myself and at least 2 other people trying to explain to you the advantages of multi process in certain situations. Whatever, carry on in clueless ignorance, I can't be bothered arguing anymore.
