What I meant was that you can be assured that std::allocator<>
directly or indirectly uses malloc() because what I said. Custum
allocators are almost never used since there's much complpexity
in providing a full-featured allocator; imagine you've to provide
the ability for the allocator to be rebound via typename
allocator_traits<alloc>::template rebind_alloc<new_alloc> for
any type, so you have to provide nearly everything a C-allocator
has to provide. No one does that; it's mich easier to replace
the whole allocation by replacing it by a thread-cache malloc()
implementation.

No, you cannot be assured of that. If you don't believe me, see the C++
standard.

It has nothting to do with the standard.
I told you why this is the most reasonable assumption.

Everything has to do with the standard.

No, you told me why you think it's "the most reasonable assumption". That
doesn't make it so, and it's actually quite unreasonable. No experienced C++
developer will make that assumption.

Better replace the global memory-allocation through mimalloc.

This would still require access or influence over the main executable,
which I (and many other C++ developers) do not have.

They do. We have a large C++ library which uses strings and STL
containers with a custom allocator built on top of the Intel TBB
allocator. OTOH, all third-party C or C++ libraries and any host
executables where our library might be loaded into still use whatever
they want, typically standard malloc().

It would even be conceptually impossible for our dynamically loaded
library to change the process malloc(), it would be far too late for that.

As usual, you are wrong. It's quite common in some circles. None of
which you've ever had any experience with; nor have you exhibited the
programming skills (or interpersonal skills) to survive in those circles.

It's quite stupid to do that. You have to implement an allocator which
can be rebound for all types with typename allocator_traits<alloc>
::template rebind_alloc<T> since you can't anticipate what the STL
-containers rebind to, i.e. you have to write an allocator whith the
full capabilities of malloc(). That's much work and it's almost
impossible to beat the performance of common replacement-allocators.
So it's just the best way to replace malloc() which is indirectly or
directly used by std::allocator<> on all platforms.

> None of which you've ever had any experience with; nor have you exhibited

I've already built a custom std::allocator<> replacement for special
cases where the allocator can be assumed not to be rebound (vector<>).
And I would be able to write an efficient allocator like mimalloc; but
I wouldn't have invented the basic structures for that - and you not
as well.

No, it is quite reasonable to follow the C++ standard.

Is it quite reasonable to argue with Bonita? (I only see reponses to
Bonita, not Bonita's own posts.)

Who's arguing? Nobody's having an argument here. Just a friendly chit-chat.

It's like a pantomime. The two of you are going round in circles.

We all know what the C++ standards say about allocators here, and that
they specifically say there is no requirement that malloc be involved in
global allocators. We all know that library implementations can make
use of extra knowledge about the implementation, in a way that user code
cannot (at least not while remaining portable and avoiding undocumented
and unspecified behaviour). We all know there is nothing in the C++
standards or documentation to suggest that you can "replace malloc" and
assume that will change the global allocator. We all know that even if
there were such a guarantee, it /still/ would not stop an implementation
from being able to use additional knowledge about its own malloc when
that is being used.

I suspect that deep down, Bonita knows it too.

Please leave it at that, unless there is actually any new information.
This "Oh, no, you can't", "Oh, yes, you can" silliness just annoys people.

Bonita is fanatically ignorant. The more you show she is wrong, the
more she will dig in and insist that she is right. You cannot convince
her - all you can do is make sure that no one else is fooled by her
misconceptions, and you've done that already. That was complete dozens
of posts ago. It's time to move on.

Oh no it isn't!

I'll get my coat...

There are some reasonable assumptions about things which aren't
specified in the standard.

That's only a matter of someone's personal opinion. Others opinions is that
it is completely unreasonable.

That's not an opinion but a reliable fact that all C++ standard
-libaries actually use malloc() indirectly to make the whole
memory-allocation replaceable.

Ok, you go ahead and write some code that depends on it, then wait when it
breaks, inevitably, after a compiler/library upgrade, then get back to us.

We'll figure out whether it's a bug, or not, at that time.

Has anyone happen to mention what happens when you assume, all the time?

And there is, of course, no requirement that things end up as a call to
"malloc" here. In particular, since C++14 (IIRC) there are sized
overloads of delete which open the possibility of having more efficient
memory allocation systems than traditional malloc/free as the heap no
longer has to track the sizes of the allocated objects. (That has
always struck me as a poorly considered aspect of C's malloc/free,
leading to significant inefficiencies.)

And even if Bonita was right that everything ends up in a call to
malloc, she would /still/ be wrong. Malloc is part of the
implementation - the implementation can have a way to find out the size
of the memory actually allocated (since it knows all the details of the
heap implementation), and make that available to other implementation
code such as the C++ container library.
