But this is not a std::string with a null in it.  The constructor uses
the first null to determine the length of the std::string to build.  The
version

     std::cout << std::string("abc\0def", 7).size() << "\n";

will print 7 and

     std::cout << std::string("abc\0def", 7) << "\n";

will print the string, null and all.

Maybe more to the point, getline will read and embed null quite
happily.
