Gnuplot does not do its own font handling, so whatever the problem is
must lie in some external library or file.  In this case I guess that
would be libpango, but I suppose it's possible that the font file
itself has become corrupted.  I do not see this problem when running
the Win 32 binary under wine on a linux system, which confirms that
the problem is not in the gnuplot binary.
