For months it's mostly been spam. Only a few of the usenet groups I used
to read regularly still get "real" postings.

Man, this is really sad, I haven't come on the newsgroup since 2007 but
it was not like this, what happened? People don't see the fun in
newsgroup anymore?

People tend to gather in local Web forums and/or mailing lists, I guess.

It's a bit of a shame, besides the greater flexibility in choosing the
UI one uses (forum software typically being insanely awful), newsgroups
always seemed to have much more variety of posters than typical forums
do ...

It seems like some superficial victory of the merchants over freedom.

How stupid is Facebook to write, and yet how popular it is. The same
goes for almost all websites.

What are the most important reasons why powerful and dedicated
protocols such as IRC/NNTP fail in your opinion? Here are some
possibilities:

- design and rich content considered "sexy" (MSN smileys)
- need a dedicated software, people still confuse Internet and a browser
- marketing issue

Overall, I guess we can say younger educated generations will knowingly
adopt the inferior solution because it's the trend.

Yet all the Internet protocols are open standards (TCP-IP and lower
layers). Websites are only the cherry on the cake. But that cherry is
worth 99% of the wealth. So of course it's only superficial, but it's
still a victory.

Sounds reasonable.

Whatever, I prefer to be an honest fan to stay here till this place
really dies.
