#987 — Problem Reinstalling SQL Server Express 2008 under Windows 7

Dear SQL and Windows 7 People:

     I have a system running Windows 7.  It is not my main system, and
I have not installed much on it.

     I installed SQL Server Express 2008 on it.  I also installed SQL
Server Denali.  The Denali installation ended up replacing my SSMS
with the Denali one.  Because of some differences in the behaviour of
the SSMS, I wanted 2008's SSMS back.

     I uninstalled both SQL Server versions and deleted all files in
the SQL Server directories in C:\Program Files and c:\Program Files
(x86).  Not knowing what to do about any possible Registry trash, I
did nothing to the Registry.

     I then installed SQL Server 2008 Express.  The installation was
successful.  Well, that is what I was told.  There was no SSMS!  I
have tried yet again (uninstall then install), and the same thing
happened again.

     I could just nuke the box and restart, but I would rather avoid
something that extreme and time-consuming.

     Is there anything I can do, or does this system get to be a
sacrificial goat to the evil god ReinstallFromOSOnUp?

     Well, having already managed to toast an XP system so that SQL
Server could not be reinstalled, that is certainly credible.

     I wish I knew what it was that I did.

     I am trying YA installation with YA version of SSE2008 -- there
are too many of them -- and maybe, it will work.  If not, I suppose I
will nuke it tomorrow.

No, installing SQL 2012 does not replace SSMS 2008. I have both versions
installed my system. (However, naîvely accepting "do you want to transfer
your settings for SSMS 2008 to SQL Server 2012, some of the settings
were transferred in the other direction.) Mind you, this was developer
edition, not Express, but I fail to see that should make a difference.

A plain installation of SQL 2008 Express does not include SSMS. You 
need SQL 2008 Express with Advanced Services, as I recall.

     Oh, is that what the difference is?  (Well, I assume that is but
one of them.)

     I thought I had installed a plain installation in the past and
gotten SSMS.  Maybe, an SP did SSMS installation for me.

     It is so hard to keep the versions straight.  Two of the versions
that I have downloaded looked to be the same size so I checked them.
They were the same size and differed in only *four* bytes in over 100
MB.  <boggle>

SQL Express only is the engine and the command-line tools. Advanced Services 
gives you quite a few more things. SSMS Express may also be a separate 
download. I don't know these details on the top of my head.

Apparently you didn't.

If you installed the service pack for a download that includes SSMS, yes.

     I was specifically referring to Denali.  It did overwrite (or at
least, override) SSMS 2008.

     I just spent a couple hours trying to sort out the versions.  I
think I got it, but complications did ensue.

     I am running Windows 7 on my test box so I went with the 64-bit
versions.  The files I settled on were:
          SQLEXPRADV_x64_ENU.exe   (version 10.00.1600.22)
          SQLEXPR_x64_ENU.exe      (version 10.00.5500.00) (SP3)
          SQLManagementStudio_x64_ENU.exe
I was going to install them in that order.

     The first one throws a compatibility error.  On previous runs, I
have gotten two errors: 1) an error in the menu about an unhandled
exception and 2) near the end of the installation, I get:
          Operation fialed with 0x8007000B
          An attempt was made to load a program with an incorrect
format.
but the installation appears to succeed.  (Whether it actually does, I
do not know.  It does run.)  I aborted on this file after getting the
compatibility error.

     I installed SP3 and had no SSMS as you indicated.

     I then installed the last program.  It threw a compatibility
error, but I continued.

     I now have a 64-bit SSE 2008 installation which apparently works,
but does it really?

     Am I using the correct versions of files?  Are there versions
that do not throw compatibility errors?

Denali = SQL 2012. If you are referring to the CTPs... Betas are betas, 
but I have not heard of anyone having had the problem that the new SSMS
occluded the other one. I am fairly confident that you did just not care 
to find it.

Yes, that's the RTM version of SQL 2008 which was released before
Windows 7 was released. You should be able to install it, but you 
need to apply a service pack to have a supported installation.

     Yes, CTP 1.

     Now, you have.

     I looked for it in the Start Menu.  That is where it always had
been.  All that was there after installing Denali was the Denali SSMS.
I could still connect to SSE 2008, but it was through Denali's SSMS.

     But as I noted in text you snipped, SP 3 *also* threw a
compatibility error.  I am concerned that I might not have a proper
SSE 2008 installation.  Do I?  I do so like to avoid error messages in
software installations.

     Is there a 64-bit SSE 2008 that will install on Windows 7 without
throwing a compatibility error?

I missed that part. Anyway, I have SQL 2005, SQL 2008 and SQL 2012 running 
on my machine without problems. Whether they produced any compatibility when 
I installed them, I don't recall. They run well anyway. 

I don't see why SP3 should generate a compatibility error. But it may depend
on which components you install. What more exactly did these errors say?
