Anyone have first hand experience with eqldata.com? They are supposed to 1) allow an existing Access application to "run", unchanged, with existing forms, reports, VBA, etc on a web browser.

We went with these guys:
http://www.remoteapphosting.net/application-hosting/

Basically setup was a piece of cake with their support people. Not a
single problem running our Access 2010 application there and we did
not have to change a thing. I highly recommend them.

We have a few clients now accessing their versions "in the cloud" (I
am so sick of that term). We rent a shared server and charge the
clients per user per month.

It runs flawlessly but people need to realize that the speed of their
Internet connection is extremely important. We had to move a client
in Alaska (?) back to our desktop version.

So it is essentially terminal server. Will it work from a browser on a
tablet or android phone?

I just found this link that seems to have excellent information on how
to setup with Access.
http://www.fmsinc.com/microsoftaccess/terminal-services/remoteapp.htm

I remember seeing Albert Kallal and others tout terminal services. Only
now do I realize that in addition to a PC client, any device with a
browser can be a client. Just that the user has to be pre-setup to use
the app.

What is the difference between remote desktop and terminal services?
What makes TS better?

remote desktop or RDP (remote desktop protocol) is the "client" software
that "connects" to terminal services. So terminal services provides the
remote desktops that you connect to with via a remote desktop program.

So just like a web browser uses HTML, then a remote desktop system is used
by Citrix and Terminal services. As noted, these client programs can "run"
inside of a browser also.

As noted, you can run the remote desktop client "inside" of a web browser.
Citrix and TS have both supported RDP in a browser via a ActiveX add-in, but
these days OFTEN this ability of the browser is disabled for security
reasons.

The company eqldata "client" is Adobe FLASH, which on some smart phones etc.
is quite problematic, but as noted RDP clients quite much exist for most
platforms and thus you really don't gain a "lot" by running such RDP clients
"inside" of a browser. However I can say that for desktop computers, flash
in a browser is quite common, so this could eliminate "some" deployment
issues.

It uses Remote Desktop. There's an app for that ;-)

I think there is an option using a browser, but we haven't tried it. I
can't think of why we would anyone to do that. Users click on an icon
on their desktop or device and they are using our application just
like anything on a PC or Mac. Can't even tell it's running remotely.

No, but there has been for over 5 years companies that offer "remote"
desktop hosting, and some specific for Access. So the above company simply
joins that group.

You been able to use Terminal Services and have TS run “inside” of a web
browser for about 15 years now.

So what that company does is provide terminal services hosting.

So nothing really new here. Terminal Services has ALWAYS been a great choice
for deploying Access applications for remote use.

The “only” new difference here is that in place of having you download +
install the ActiveX TS client that is available for a web browser, is their
client uses Adobe FLASH 10.

Of course the “issue” of using flash is that a good number of tablets and
even the iPad does not support FLASH.

However most tablets (including iPad) does and did in the past have a RDP
client that works with TS (ie: a remote desktop client that works with TS).

So is it much of a big deal to run the TS client “inside” of a web browser,
or simply that of using a real RDP client program?

So using TS inside of a web browser is nothing new. I always stated “many”
times that TS is one of the best choices for deploying Access applications
for remote use. It has in the past and “remains” the #1 choice for remote
use of Access.

And as noted we had the “choice” to deploy + use terminal services via a web
browser for about 15 years now. (you had to run both Terminal Services +
IIS)

I should point out that www.accesshosting.com also provides remote desktop
hosting of Access applications.

http://accesshosting.com/remote-desktop-hosting

I suppose the requirement of having to use FLASH for the remote client will
be a deal breaker for many, but I suppose there much debate as the past case
of having to install an ActiveX TS client for the last 15 years was “also” a
pain point for some.

In most cases dumping the web browser and using a RDP (ts client) program is
preferred.

There are free RDP clients for tables that work well.
