Hello

I have a weird issue, I'm running FM12A on win7, create a layout with a PNG (or TIFF, JPEG, I've try them all) in the background and on top of that, some field to fill out the form that I need.

Script that to print a copy and automatic print to fax.

On my Win7 PC... no problem work like a charm.... from 2 other PC in the office running XP FM12A, I can see in browse mode all the object and field on the layout. Run the same script.... both fax and print are blank?!

When I go on that layout in browse mode and switch to preview... it's blank.

I've check for print setup, all object have the "do not print" unchecked.

Look like FM have issue with the picture in the background.

I also check for user permission and users are allow to print (it work for everything else (and when I run the test I use my full access account)

It's something to do with Win XP, I also got 2 time runtime error C++ bla bla bla and FM12A crash.

Any one have a clue what else I may have forget to check ??

Thank you

- Since the file has crashed (perhaps several times) it could by now
well be corrupted.
- FMP always had issues (or at least I had issues) when transferring a
file for printing/preview from one system to the next. Go into layout
mode and double check that the background doesn't go outside printing
margins or across part-boundaries.
- try creating a layout without the picture, can you print that? If you
can then you have to try to recreate your background in a different way.
Perhaps not pasting it onto the layout, but import it in a global
container field. Then use the field als background.

I doubt the file is corrupt, because it's running on FMS, and the problem was there before it crash, so I think it's more of a XP issue. But I will try it anyway to rebuild the database.

The picture is inside the print area and set as the background, and all the fields and merge field are on top, and NONE of them print or display in preview.

If I remove the picture in the back ground, leave only the fields... they show up.

But keep in mind that in browse mode, every thing is showing perfectly.

I tried on a 3rd XP machine, same result. On my Win7, it's working.

Bad luck ... I'm the only one using a win7 station.

I also try to delete the picture in win7, save the layout.
Open full access on the winXP, go to layout, import the PNG, save, preview.... BLANK.

There's definitely an issue with FM12, WinXP and pictures ?!?!

Where on the Layout have you put the image and how big is it?

I have noticed sometimes that there are issues with an image placed in,
for example, the Header part of a Layout and stretched to cover the
whole Layout (i.e. going over Part-boundaries into the Body, Footer,
etc.)

The best option is to instead use separate images in each Part - one
image in the Header, another image in the Body, another image in the
Footer, etc. Of course it helps if the image is easily matchable at the
boundaries, which can be a problem with a thin Body Part that is
repeated for multiple records.

Another option is to recreate the printed strucuture using only on
Layout Part (e.g. a Header) using Global Fields, etc.

If none of that works, then the only option could be to simply print
off a stack of paper with only the image on it (from another
application) and then use it like a pre-printed letterhead and just
over-print the details from FileMaker as and when needed.

Thanks Harry, but this layout have only a body part, and it's a one page only print.

The picture is an export from Adobe save as other: JPEG or PNG so it's a form 8-1/2x11 reduce to approx 95% so it will fit in the page. (I wish I could have a way to send FM data to a PDF Form instead... I know some plugin exist but they don't work 100% if you don't have Adobe Pro on every station and the solution post on ISO Filemaker magasine in 2008 is way to much complicated to implement for my small head!!)

I Have tried to import as JPG and PNG, both same result.

I'm starting to thing, the problem is with the picture itself.
I have also try to go edit the picture into Corel Paint or Windows Paint to trim the unused edge, so the file is reformat and reduce in size and import it, still no success.

So I try with a picture taken from my iphone, guess what! it's printing full page!

My guess is the picture itself, the Adobe format leave something in the picture that create a problem and FM with WinXP can't handle it.

I have a big screen monitor, so I put my PDF file and use Win7 screen capture, and create a capture of the form, save it into JPG (in 2 parts) and import those 2 parts into FM, resize and edit some fields to match... and VOILA ! it's working properly on Win7 AND WinXP.

This remind me of the issue I had with HP printers driver and FM4...5...6 and Windows and when I contact both technical support, it was always some else problem! But I was stuck with the printing problem!!

If you're using Adobe Photoshop to edit the photo, try going to File > Save As Web. That will strip most unnecessary information from the file.

That could be the cause of the problem. The shareware GraphicConverter
on the Mac has a similar option to remove extra rubbish like custom
icons / preview images.
