Here's the example. In a custom function from the Advanced Training Series:
Let ([

numOnly = Filter ( phoneNumber; "1234567890" );

error = Case ( Length ( numOnly )<> 10; 1; 0 )

];

Case ( not error;

"(" & Left ( numOnly; 3 ) &

") " &

Middle ( numOnly; 4; 3 ) & "-" &

Middle ( numOnly; 7; 4 );

phoneNumber

)

)

I got it. Apparently it's just another way (as if we needed one) to say not equal to. :)

If you ask me, it is the PREFERRED way of saying not equal. The
not-equal sign used in FileMaker does not copy properly into a text
document (ends up as a question mark), at least on Windows. Same is
true for the FileMaker more/less-than-or-equal-to symbol. Instead, I
always use "<>" or "<=" or ">=".

<> is the original "not equal" symbol in programming languages like
BASIC from back when there was no ‚ (= with slash through it) symbol on
computers. The C programming language had to be different and went with
the != symbol instead.

It's certainly easier to type <> on Windows computers than try and
figure out what the obscure keyboard code is (on a Mac you just hold
down the Option key and press = to get the mathematically /
typographically correct version).

Thanks Harry. I hadn't seen it for a while, it was bugging me as I knew I should have known what it meant. I'd just got used to the options I was given in FM , and obv. hadn't had to copy and paste it out of FM :)

It also makes sense if you think about those symbols individually, sort
of.

"A <> B" could be thought of as simply a shortened version of "(A < B)
or (A > B)", saying "A is less than or greater than B", which by
definition must mean A can not equal B.

Maybe due to win, maybe a FMP bug, but nowaydays no reason at all to
omit the ≠. Even the the formerly ASCII based usenet can cope with that.
