But, since a large amount of what POSIX says about I/O is unimplementable or unusable, I wouldn't bet on even the implementable extensions to C being reliable. I don't even know how many systems support the X/Open System Interface in full, which that depends on. Regards, Nick Maclaren.

This was the same in PL/I. You could either keep the data as character
in the format specified by the picture or use the picture as a mask to
edit numeric data to character or de-edit the sterling data to numeric.
Offhand I don't know how the numerics were stored, I'd have to look it up.

Mostly I find pictures most convenient, occasionally I want printf-like
formatting in PL/I. The most obvious case is to have numeric data
converted to character string with the length equal to the number of
digits (and maybe sign) rather than the constant length of the picture.
I think Multics had a system library (IOR?) that provided
functionality similar to printf.

I myself grew up with FORTRAN format statements and every time I have written a printf format over the past 20 years, I would rather write it in Fortran :-). I suppose a 1990's or early 2000's computer sciency implementation would be object oriented and have a general class for currency, with subclasses for each monetary system, most of which would be decimal oriented but a few of which would be specialized to the point of pounds/shilling/pence with a general rendering call that is specialized for each currency as necessary. Arithmetic in each class could "know" the business accounting rules. I'm 100% sure what I wrote in the above paragraph describes a thousand different and disparate object-oriented replacements for COBOL, none of which I've ever heard of, and none of which has ever caught on :-). Tim.

Since there are 12 Unciae in an As, and 5 Unciae in a Quincunx, they could hardly have done otherwise in its case. I suppose they could have named the Quncunx as a fraction of the Sestertius, or the Quadrans and the Triens on the basis of the number of Unciae in them, so it's true it's not unique, but still, it is natural. Malta was the last houldout for LSD coinage, lasting a year longer than the UK. If you count in the Sovereign military order of Malta; still recognised as a "nation without a land", it still keeps LSD, 6 piccol = 1 grano, 20 grani = 1 taro, 12 tari = 1 scudo. The NYSE traded in fractions until Febryary 2001, several decades after the brits went decimal. Otherwise the non-cent divisions are lame. Tunis divides into units of a thousand; mauretania and madagascar divides into 5; still sort of decimal. Besides, inflation are taking care of those. -- mrr .. amazed that there arent any more holdouts.

True, but misleading. Not all fractions were possible. Most stocks sold in multiples of 1/4, while some low prices ones used eighths. I think a few "penny stocks" used sixteenths. Note the commonality here. All of the denominators fractions were even powers of two, so were exactly expressible in a binary system. No stock was priced at say 11 1/3 dollars per share. -- - Stephen Fuld (e-mail address disguised to prevent spam)

I understand and agree. However the software seemed to be able to do 8ths arithmetic correctly. the decimal stuff I see on my statements don't. and, yes, I coomplained. /BAH

Malta is an island in the Mediterranean, so it is hardly without land. This is closer to the old Roman currency than the British pound - if the Scudo corresponds to the pound, then the Grano corresponds to the penny... and the Taro corresponds to 1s 8d. So if the Scudo is a troy pound sterling, as it were, the Taro is a troy ounce sterling. Dividing the Grano into six Piccol instead of four is just a nice touch. John Savard

"Malta" and the "Sovereign military order of Malta" (SMOM) are two different entities. The first is an island state in the Mediterranean Sea, EU member state. The latter has a full name of "Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of Saint John of Jerusalem of Rhodes and of Malta" This is the lastof the independent, sovereign chivalry orders from the middle ages. They lost their last territory in 1798, Malta proper, and are now located in Rome. They have general status of a sovereign entity, rather like the Vatican. It remains a catholic order, but does not have the pope as a secular head of state; rather the head of state is a cardinal; until 1990 of aristocratic birth. They have money, issue stamps, have UN observer status beside the Palesinians, they have ca 13000 member citizens, and have and army and an air force; and have been included in several peace treaties, especially the Treaty of Amiens, and the Italian peace accord with the Allies. They also have a special relationship with the EU and NATO; but are not recognised by the US, and were an unconstitutional entity in Norway until 1956. They have properties in the Vatical, Italy and Malta that are granted extraterritoriality; they have full diplomatic relations with 104 nations, special relations with 6 (Germany, Luxembourg, Belguim, Switzerland and Canada) and have partial recognition of another 58, e.g. recognition of passports, stamps, currency. They have an ITU member status, and have radio call signs (prefix 1A) , and would be granted an ISO3166 code if they asked, but they have not done so. They could then have a top levevl domain and telephone, telex and x.121 country codes. They issue italian motor vehicle plates with prefix SMOM. >This is closer to the old Roman currency than the British pound - if >the Scudo corresponds to the pound, then the Grano corresponds to the >penny... and the Taro corresponds to 1s 8d.
