This (the blank stare) is much more likely when you add various lose
change, so that the amount to be returned will significantly reduce the
number of coins, but still not a simple amount.

Indeed. Fortunately usually the desire to avoid holding up the line

Me too, although if they're not busy I sometime will use the
opportunity to unload excess change/small bills. I paid $14.68 for
something the other day, was the only one in line, and had been loaded
down with singles and change. A twenty, three singles, and $1.68 in
change (mostly dimes and nickels, to boot). The young lady handled it
just fine, although she did count my change twice.
But I wouldn't do that if there were a bunch of people behind me.

The fully general abitrary set of arbitrarily ordered source bits is indeed elegant, but extremely rarely needed. (OTOH, I suspect emulation of a heavily extended instruction set, with bits added wherever they would fit, could be a candidate? In those cases JIT seems to be the proper solution.) > > I am increasingly interested in extracted multiple bitfields at once. > Possibly into different elements of a vector. And this is the real issue! All those funky packed pixel formats need all 3(4) of rgb(a) components, so having to use 6-10 instructions to extract them all is both power and time expensive. > > Perhaps a vector bitfield extract is all we need. I may just be seduced > by the elegance of BMM - and the desire to kill two birds with one stone. In this case, probably so. A bitfield S/G operation would be neat: With 256-bit registers you can have up to 16 16-bit destination fields, each would require 12 or 13 bits to specify (starting offset + length). Unpack a bunch of 10:11:10:1 rgba pixels by first loading two registers with the the same pattern, but applied to the first and second half of a 256-bit input. Each pixel becomes a 16:16:16:16 block in the destination register. The result would be one load and two unpack operations to convert 8 input pixels. With 128-bit SSE registers things fit less well: You must have length masks of at least 3 bits (1-8) in order to be able to extract byte values, leaving just 5 bits to specify starting position, i.e. just enough to cover a 32-bit source register. Going to the same 16-bit bitmask specifiers leaves room for just 8 of them, so you would only have room to specify/unpack two source pixels. I.e. you would still need three operations while unpacking 4 input pixels. Terje -- - <Terje.Mathisen at tmsw.no> "almost all programming can be viewed as an exercise in caching"
