Likely reasoning: Unless it is more profitable to recycle than to make it new, why bother recycling it?... Then, there are some metals (such as aluminum) that while historically expensive, are in a downward trend with a comparably low salvage value. Versus, copper or steel or brass, yeah the recycling centers will pay a fair amount for these. Aluminum? Not as much. Both aluminum and glass being almost not worth the effort. Say, new (at a metal supplier): Steel is generally cheaper than aluminum. But, for recycling: Scrap steel gives a better return. But, it almost stands to reason in a way: Aluminum, Silicon, and Oxygen, are among the most common elements in Earth's crust; the world isn't going to run out of glass and aluminum anytime soon. So, it likely comes down to the relative cost of mining and processing of new material, vs transporting and reprocessing existing material. Given enough time, aluminum might eventually become the cheapest metal. ...

But, likely, as more total aluminum is produced the relative cost of aluminum would go gown. While recycling aluminum makes sense, it does come with the tradeoff that recycling aluminum reduces the relative cost of aluminum (and thus the value of producing new aluminum would go down), so is less likely to be favored by the primary producers (where a relative scarcity is better for profit margins, ...). I am aware though they are apparently building a new aluminum plant / refinery somewhere in the area (near Inola). Will apparently be the biggest aluminum plant in the US once finished. Looking it up, seems the current going rate for power (for commercial/industrial use): $0.05 / kWh (general) $0.02 / kWh (off-peak) I guess the area is known partly for having comparably cheap electricity, vs current US average price of $0.19/kWh. Looks it up, most of the local power plants are using natural gas. Looks up more, apparently Oklahoma also has cheaper natural gas, at around $5 per thousand cubic feet, vs $13 (US average). Apparently Oklahoma and Texas are among the top producers of natural gas in the US (well, besides Pennsylvania; which also makes a lot). ... For a lot of the CNC stuff I am doing, aluminum is one of the most common metals used (primarily 6061, sometimes 7075 and similar), followed by carbon steel. Sometimes stainless steel, but stainless steel is both more expensive and a pain to work with. Theoretically, one could melt and recast aluminum, but less likely to be considered as "acceptable" (as the quality and metalurgy properties are less likely to be the same as newly bought metal). Say, if one goes and melts down the contents of their chip buckets (and probably getting some ambiguous mixture of 6061 and 7075 and similar). But, AFAIK, the aluminum chips and drops are mostly not being recycled around here. Like, if one brings in a big trashcan of aluminum chips to the recycler and maybe gets $8 or $12 or similar, not necessarily worth the hassle in this case. ...

Aluminum is produced from bauxite which is around 40% aluminum and needs a multi-step energy intensive process to turn into metallic aluminum. But aluminum scrap is already metallic aluminum. My impression is that we are about as far down the experience curve as we are likely to get, and using scrap as a source will always be far cheaper than bauxite. Vs, say, 7075 which is more of an aluminum-zinc-magnesium-copper alloy. So, roughly 90% aluminum, 10% "other stuff". But, either way, recyclers aren't that inclined to pay one all that much for the contents of ones' chip buckets. The can itself (bottom plus cylinder side) is quite pure Al, but the lid is an alloy with enough Mg added to make an impact on worldwide magnesium consumption. More likely it's limited transportation so they can't ship it to more lucrative markets. Prices all over the US are much lower than they are in Europe and Asia because we can ship only limited amounts overseas as CNG or LNG. Also it is a byproduct of processing shale. Both Oklahoma and Texas are known for oil wells, and for shale. So, presumably this is where most of the natural gas is coming from, and abundant natural gas likely also resulting in comparably the cheap electricity (though, not exactly a whole lot of renewables here; mostly just natural gas-fired power plants). ...

On my oil wells in west Texas, they flared gas until the gas pipeline could be built to a gas processing/pumping station. It is unreasonable to transport gas from well head to pumping station using trucks.

Where I am, we have so-called "single stream" waste processing: you don't need to separate recyclables because everything in the trash ends up being dumped on a conveyor and gets sorted out at the transfer center. You can separate recyclables, and if you do they are taken separately from your trash ... but most people here just don't bother unless there is a large amount involved (e.g., moving boxes, big party, new matress, etc.). Our trash collectors will take pretty much anything except old paint, oil, gasoline, etc. They even will take furniture and appliances, although those may have to wait for a different truck. Mileage varies considerably. There are some locales here that force separating recyclables by law ... but many (including mine) don't because of single stream processing.

Say, for example, if rules in Oklahoma might be different, say, from those in Texas. Or, maybe Arkansas might be different still, possibly even more different. Who knows... There are likely more local variations as well, say: Where I am living here, city people get on your case if you leave cars parked on the lawn in one's yard. Where a relative lives (slightly further out), they seemingly don't care if cars are parked on the lawn. But, at the same time, it is also a place where the neighbors across the fence (the same ones that sometimes burn a bunch of plastic and similar) also have a part of the yard full of chickens. Across another fence, there is a much bigger yard where often there are horses roaming around. Occasionally, one may also see people riding horses and similar as well (sometimes along the side of the road and similar). But, say, where I am living, no one has or rides horses. There are some people living in Kansas (sorta extended family, but not direct relatives in my case) where their yard is basically an open trash dump. But, at the same time, they also had pigs and goats, albeit in separate areas (IOW, not in the parts of the yard that were basically a trash dump). Though, at the time of the old weird PC, was living in Nevada, and (at least, ~ 25 ish years ago), old PC's/etc went into general purpose dumpsters. This place was different, basically desert, except that there were basically dirt roads and mobile homes. It was a bit of a walk to reach a paved road. IIRC, garbage cans (and trash pickup) weren't really a thing there. When I was living in Arizona, it was similar, except that it rained more so dirt roads didn't hold up nearly as well. It also rained enough that cactus and sparse grass would grow; unlike the part of Nevada, a short distance outside of Reno, where it was dry enough that the dirt was relatively plant free, except in places where one actively watered it. Though, for contrast, in this part of OK, it is different in that it is mostly wood-frame houses, and the roads are paved. There are other differences as well, say: Where I am at now, there is city water and sewer... Where relatives are at, they have city water, but use a septic tank. Where I was in Arizona, it was well water and a septic tank (1). 1: Though, initially (before a well pump was set up), it was a 1000 gallon water tank, and water needed to be brought in to refill it. Though, at the place in Nevada, it was city water. ...

In my rural neighborhood, there are three trucks - trash, recycling and greenwaste. I have the smallest trash can they offer and it takes me two to three weeks to fill it. It's pretty easy to reduce the amount of waste you generate through the choices you make and the goods you purchase. Don't by canned sparking water or water in disposable plastic bottles, for example. Eschew products packaged in in excessive plastic packaging. The area I am in, isn't really either urban or rural I think. IIRC, yard here is around 2.5 acre, whereas a neighbor has somewhere around 8 acres (so a much bigger yard). Another neighbor (across a different fence), having a much smaller yard (around 1 acre). Contrast, say, in suburbs or housing developments where the houses are basically right next to each other with very little yard space. At the relative's house, I think the yard is in the area of 4 acres (so, enough that we could set up a machine shop in the back yard, along with a few storage units, etc). The neighbor with the horses has a much bigger yard, maybe 12 acres, but I think maybe much smaller and horses would be unhappy as they seem to like to run around and would need at least some distance to get up to speed. Maybe counts as rural, dunno... Still not quite the same as the open expanses of land further away from cities though (where the land is either wide open, or the occasional corn fields or similar). Which is like, more rural. I think there are some blue areas down by Oklahoma City and similar though, but where I am living is pretty far from OKC. Here, we are near a city (Tulsa), but not particularly close to the main urban parts of the city (nor in "Broken Arrow" which is mostly the land of suburbs). Partly up near Owasso and similar as well. But, yeah, also up near the borders with Kansas, Arkansas, and Missouri. Where, Kansas and Missouri are the closest borders, Arkansas a little further.
