I just remembered there is sort of a model for that. _The_Machine_Gun_ by Shinn is a series of 5 volumes (later a sixth was added) published in the 1950's which is a comprehensive review of machine gun technology. Volume 1 is mostly history, and I forget what the other volumes specifically cover, but one volume was sort of a classification of different approaches to each facet of design. For example, most machine guns have a way to quickly change barrels. There's only a few different ways to attach the barrel, and an example of each is shown as drawings that highlight the essential features. It's really a great example of an expert laying out all the choices facing a machine gun designer.
