Thanks for the insight.  Or at least the reminder.

I worry that there is resistance to traps on scalar machines.

But you point out that there was an even bigger problem with traps on 
vector machines.  Do you terminate with a vector half-done, and a mask 
indicating how far along you got?  Do you require that the mask be of 
the form 111111000000, i.e. everything to the left, or lower, is done, 
nothing above is done?  Precise, or not?

Of course, this point is almost moot.  Classsic vector machines are 
almost dead.  The forms in which they are re-arising, like LRB, solve 
this problem more cleanly.

Except, of course, that just moves the problem of precision out of 
hardware and into software.  If you are running a DO loop on 128 
processors, when you trap, which iterations have completed?
