That's my experience also. I've done bit-banged I2C a couple times,
and it took about a half day each time. Using HW I2C controllers has
always taken longer. The worst one I remember was on a Samsung ARM7
part from 20 years ago. Between the mis-translations and errors in the
documentation and the bugs in the HW, it took at least a week to get
the I2C controller to reliably talk to anything.
