Air quality remains unhealthy in areas surrounding the warehouse burning
in Boyle Heights, five days after the cold storage facility caught fire.

Los Angeles County Public Health officials have issued a health advisory
in response to the air quality. Health experts are encouraging people to
stay indoors or leave the L.A. Basin completely if they suffer from
health issues that are exacerbated by poor air quality.

Smoke from the fire is putting fine particles in the air that can
irritate the nose, eyes, throat and lungs. These particulates can affect
people suffering from heart or lung conditions. Those most at risk
include the young, the elderly and people with respiratory illnesses.

Doctor Ali Jamehdor with Dignity Health told KTLA that young people are
more at risk “because their lungs have not fully developed yet.”

“Smoke and irritants such as this can affect them much harder and much
quicker,” Jamehdor said. “People with asthma, underlying lung disease
such as COPD, emphysema, this smoke can trigger them into going into an
asthma exacerbation, or a breathing condition that might require
emergency care.”

Residents are advised to limit any outdoor activity while the air
quality remains unhealthy. Following Governor Gavin Newsom’s State of
Emergency declaration, city and county leaders have opened a
smoke-relief center at City Terrace Park, east of Boyle Heights.

Those who must go outside are advised to wear an N95 mask. Watch the
full report from KTLA’s Carlos Saucedo in the video at the top of this
story.
