Many cases now have glass sides. but what about radiation from the 
components inside? cases were all metal to shield radiation.

yeah I have one, and there's no radiation from my metal computer cases, 
but I don't have a glass sided case to test

Don't know about radiation but I've always bought solid sided cases as a 
preference. I have a case here that has many clear sided (perspex) 
versions but only one solid panel version - obviously not the popular 
option - but I don't need to see the innards of a computer in operation 
and I find the glowing neons annoying.

At least not to protect against "radiation from the components".

Shielding components /from/ radiation, yes, but even CSIRAC at full tilt 
couldn't generate an alpha particle!

Yeah, same as the ECU and other parts of car computers are shielded from 
*external radiation*. Back in the early days of fuel injection, certain 
cars had problems driving near or past AM/FM radio towers. A colleague's 
Commodore didn't like the towers in (IIRC) Lower Plenty, Vic. The car 
would run like a bag of shit until he was sufficiently out of range.

I do recall ads for motherboards that cite low radiation as a feature tho

Well the fronts always tended to be plastic, so a clear plastic (or
I guess top-end models _might_ use glass) side isn't that much
different for shielding.

Laptops are already unshielded though (mine drowns out weak FM
radio stations when it's running), and EM radiation from poorly
shielded USB cables (and before that serial cables) are well
known in the form of "mouse noise" picked up by PC speaker cables
running nearby.

The computer world is already a mess of EM noise, so I don't think
clear case sides change much. Users could always fit some wire mesh
inside the case window if concerned about it anyway.

Back in 1980, we were replacing an IBM370 with a Fujitsu M180 at 
National Library. During the changeover both system were run in parallel 
to the point where every desk that had an IBM terminal, had a new 
Fujitsu one as well. A problem arose when the Fujitsu terminal was 
switched on, the IBM terminal stopped working. This seemed reasonable to 
us 🙂 but the customer demanded a fix.

After a bunch of other people had been unable to fix the problem, I was 
asked to take a look. The terminals were completely dumb, all the smarts 
were in the controller. Each controller ran, I think, 16 terminals with 
a coax cable between. One thing that I noticed was that the signal 
return was not ground, the two were connected by a capacitor at the 
controller end. I tried fitting a bigger capacitor and bingo - problem 
solved.

The Library's chief engineer asked me to make a report as to what the 
original problem was. I said electro-magnetic radiation between the long 
coax cables that were run in close proximity. He nearly exploded at that 
"You can't say electro-magnetic radiation" he said "The whole place will 
walk out". So we agreed to just say interference.

Depends. Some have a big gap at in the metal at the front.
Particularly some horizontal desktop cases like of the 1990s
Pentium 1 PC I'm posting from now.

Well it doesn't defeat the purpose of the window on microwaves. But
the purpose of a window on the side of a PC is unclear anyway.

Well sure. Hence the early-2000s Pentium III laptop I'm posting
from now. :)

I recently replaced its HDD because the original finally wore
out (it started intermittently getting read errors).

I just take a photo of inside and that tells me all I need to know
about what I've got in there. But for people trying to show off I
don't think a mesh would prevent that.

When we bought the PCs to run the museum's 737-800 simulator, we 
deliberately asked for full metal cases with no lights to minimise any 
distraction from the simulation.
