anyone here knowledgeable about AMD processors? (I'm not) I have this
motherboard https://www.asrock.com/mb/AMD/980de3u3s3/ currently using
AMD Athlon II X3 420 processor and would like to upgrade the CPU. does
anyone know what would be the best option? I will have to buy used on
eBay of course, I assume. thanks,

Supported CPU list tells you which CPU's are supported and you can
compare performance using the power of Google and youtube.

https://www.asrock.com/mb/AMD/980de3u3s3/#CPU

I used a FX4350 for about a decade and was going to upgrade to an FX8350
but the board died and put an end to that.

thanks. that's exactly what I needed, so I can know what's better than
what. strangely, it was in the actual link I gave, lol. silly me..

btw.. this motherboard is great. it has everything, SATA2, SATA3, IDE,
floppy, HDMI, USB2, and USB3. a rather unusual motherboard

so the Opteron 3300 is the most powerful CPU for this motherboard then

No, the Opteron is a new, low power (as in wattage) processor but the
FX8350 is a much better performer.

Type "Opteron vs FX8350 comparison" into Google.

AMD Piledriver CPUs had 1 FPU and 1 scheduler shared between a pair of
integer units. They did poorly on a Windows home PC. They did better on
server mainboards with quad-channel memory and Linux. But anyway get rid
of the Athlon, that is a half-ratpower CPU.

plenty still available on the web, with widely varying prices. I'll
decide what I want when I know what I should pay for each variant
