We both lived and worked there and never experienced any theft, threat or violence. The car (spent every night in an open public car park for five years) was never broken into. I found Bankies kind, good humoured, resilient. Tough? They had to be. Clydebank was pretty much razed to the ground and burnt out, during the WW2 Blitz. For two nights, over 400 bomber planes dropped over 1000 bombs on it. Out of approximately 12,000 houses, only seven remained undamaged — with 4,000 completely destroyed and 4,500 severely damaged. Over 35,000 people were made homeless, 528 people died, far more were injured. http://tinyurl.com/gqysa4g http://www.educationscotland.gov.uk/scotlandshistory/20thand21stcenturie s/worldwarii/clydebankblitz/ Since then Clydebank has been rebuilt. Domestic housing conditions are NOTHING even remotely approaching the appalling shanties of poor America. http://newyork.cbslocal.com/2015/04/01/shantytown-in-hoboken-hills- houses-nearly-50-homeless-people/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_tent_cities_in_the_United_States Janet.

I checked the Florida example, and it is far from appalling. http://www.shelterlistings.org/details/36013/ What is appalling is that there are people who require this type of shelter. -- Tony Cooper - Orlando, Florida

I spent a few days in Glasgow a year ago. A week or so later I overnighted in Erskine, where I went roaming in the gloaming along the river bank. I see from the map that Erskine is next door to Clydebank. Apart from the miserable weather and rubbish floating in the river I saw nothing wrong with the place. Edinburgh has more awnings over the shop fronts, so perhaps the people there know enough to come in out of the rain. -- Peter Moylan http://www.pmoylan.org Newcastle, NSW, Australia
