What is an emergency? This week the UK Government used the emergency-alert system to send a message to mobile phones in England and Wales, asking people to avoid starting wildfires - not to have barbecues etc.. Apparently, people were startled by the loud notification, thought at first that Putin might have lost it and fired the missiles, i.e. that there was a real emergency. Drivers swerved, risked crashing and starting fires; films were interrupted in cinemas; and so on. Many have now turned the alerts off. 'Government faces backlash after "needless" emergency wildfire alert sent to millions of phones' - <https://www.dailymail.com/news/article-16053599/Confusion-millions-peoples-phones-England-Wales-emergency-wildfire-alert-without-warning.html> In Wales, the message was sent in Welsh first and in English some minutes later - even though all Welsh speakers also understand English. 'Emergency alert sent in Welsh then English causes debate' - <https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c79gg1pyxe2o> : "The UK government did not comment directly, but said under the Welsh Language Act it has to send alerts in Welsh first…." Achubwch eich hunain nawr, yn gyflym, cyn i ni rybuddio'r Saeson!

I don't think that it's unreasonable to send such an alarm. It's estimated that the cost of wildfires in Europe is about $200'000'000'000. The problem is that the alarm sound is excruciatingly loud. We have had tests in Denmark. -- Bertel, Kolt, Danmark

I think it's the wrong channel. A mass SMS would be more appropriate, or spots on the radio, as the French have. Emergency alerts are a modern version of the air-raid siren, should be reserved for what is both very important and very urgent. Misusing them is like, er, crying "Focke-Wulf!"

Its purpose is to command instant attention.

Yes, it's easy to confuse urgency and importance. I have to remind
myself of this when scheduling tasks. UIHF - is it urgent, important,
helpful, fun? ('Fun' has its own importance, of course. aue is fun, and
probably good for the neurons.)
(I use electronic mind-maps for this and much else. Amazingly, the
mind-mapping software I bought thirty years ago still runs pretty well,
even though it was written for Windows and I now have it under Ubuntu
and WINE ("Wine Is Not an Emulator"). Long may this continue! If
suddenly I couldn't read any of my .mmp files, I'd be lost. $ find .

Somewhere I have diagram of a four squares, giving four
characteristics:
1. Urgent and Important
2. Important but not urgent
3. Urgent but not important
4. Neither urgent nor important.
Used to sort your to-do list.

I have a mindmapping program somewhere on my computer, but I haven't
used it for years. I don't think my mind works that way.

Also, are you (Steve Hayes, off-screen above) a disciple of Tony Buzan
or perhaps Porphyry of Tyros?

I had to look look up Tony Buzan, having never heard of him before,
and know little of Porphyry of Tyre.
The mind-mapping prograsm I have on my computer can be found here:
https://www.edrawsoft.com/
but I've hardly used it at all.
I first heard of mind-mapping about 30years ago from one Alice
Goodwin-Davey who came to the University of South Africa from the USA
in about 1994 to teach students and lecturers how to write, and she
was a strong advocate of mind mapping.
I installed the program on my computer mainly to see if it would help
me to see the point of mind mapping, but whenever I've looked at it my
mind seems to freeze, and I can't think of anything I want to map.

Here's a freehand suggestion:
<URL:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mind_map#/media/File:Tennis-mindmap.png>
but you can also delegate the job to some of the LLMs (of course).

That seems the wrong way round. It's better to have the thing, and then map it. Mind-maps are useful for noting and exploring problems and ideas, grouping points that go together, and for planning - checklists and so on. E.g. trips - insurance, flights, accommodation (find, reserve, deposit, balance), car…, even packing lists. Don't forget to renew your ESTA! Once created, this sort of mind-map can remain useful for years with just minor changes. (My own JobList.mmp is very old, and embarrassingly static.) This is where electronic mind-maps have the advantage over paper ones. Modifications don't make them untidy, and there's no need to copy them.

I discovered some of Tony Buzan's books in the university library &
used mind-mapping to help organize my thesis. I haven't used it much
since then but this thread has inspired me to start again.
I see the Wikipedia article mentions Ramon Llull as well as Porphyry
of Tyros.

Thanks. If the worst came to pass, I'd have to look at that.
