Well, that might have an effect - though remakes are rarely a patch on the original, and Films With A Message are rarely appealing. The real problem, though, is a few bellicose leaders at the head of powerful rogue states, notably Putin and Trump, and I can't see them changing. The Americans must have been a bunch of /wingnuts/ to elect Trump. I understand, though, that he did say, "I’m going to stop wars,"¹ so perhaps they believed him² and didn't expect him now to be giving it laldy in the Middle East. ¹<https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026/jun/08/what-trump-actually-said-no-war-promise> ²I know, I know; they knew him and should surely have known better.

It's probably a bit too soon to tell if Burnham will be as bellicose as Starmer. There are probably a few more who are demanding more money for killing people, and saying there's not enough for healing the sick, or improving the lives of people generally. -- Steve Hayes from Tshwane, South Africa Web: http://www.khanya.org.za/stevesig.htm Blog: http://methodius.blogspot.com E-mail - see web page, or parse: shayes at dunelm full stop org full stop uk

So I did. I try to ignore the Middle East, and Macron will soon be gone, to be replaced perhaps by Le Pen or Mélenchon (qui est un con). > It's probably a bit too soon to tell if Burnham will be as bellicose > as Starmer. Apparently Burnham was focused on buses in Manchester - and still is, since he's just capped fares in England. Anyway, he's already lost me. He's promising radical change, which I think calls for an election and a fresh mandate. It seems he disagrees. > There are probably a few more who are demanding more money for killing > people, and saying there's not enough for healing the sick, or > improving the lives of people generally. I remember the old slogan "Jobs not bombs!" It was misconceived. Bombs are jobs, a lot of jobs, and money circulating in the economy.

That wasn't just about a nuclear war, but about a doomsday device, a "salted" bomb. It's been pointed out that there's no limit to how large a nuclear bomb can be made. If it's extremely large, it won't be deliverable. But it wouldn't need to be, as it could work its magic if detonated anywhere on Earth. However, mixing of air north and south of the equator tends to be slow. So people on the other side would have plenty of time to build long-term shelters. But of course they'd have to already be there. Simply having a passport might not give enough notice. Especially if the doomsday device goes off by accident. -- Keith F. That's an interesting point. I find it hard to believe that even a few people could survive in bunkers and mineshafts for years - let alone hundreds of millions of people. This is far beyond Anderson shelters and sleeping on platforms in the Tube. Where would their clean food and water come from? Their power? Where would their waste go? Wouldn't they suffer psychological problems "beyond the dreams of analysts"?… I've visited mines and bunkers. Living in them permanently would be very bleak.

Another similar dystopian novel, on the other hand -- Down to a Sunless Sea -- suggested that a refugee plane that headed to Antarctica was overtaken by radioactive fallout soon after arriving there. Though the book was published more than 45 years ago, the scenario seems more likely than ever in current circumstances: <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Down_to_a_Sunless_Sea_(Graham_novel)> -- Steve Hayes from Tshwane, South Africa Web: http://www.khanya.org.za/stevesig.htm Blog: http://methodius.blogspot.com E-mail - see web page, or parse: shayes at dunelm full stop org full stop uk

I've read another novel with a bleaker scenario. It might have been Harry Harrison's "War with the Robots". In that war both sides retreated underground, and left their AIs to manage the war. Eventually both sides wanted to surrender, but the AIs wouldn't let them contact each other, and had stopped taking orders from humans. It was like having a military whose main reason for existence would be undermined if the war stopped. -- Peter Moylan peter@pmoylan.org http://www.pmoylan.org Newcastle, NSW
