This must be interpreted in the same way. Both of those 'definitions' rule out infertile women. For breeding purposes (both humans and animals) it is convenient to refer to 'male' and 'female'; but that excludes a large proportion of the population who do not (or cannot) breed. In fact 'sex' is made up of many components, some binary and some non-binary, and is an analogue quantity. Society has chosen to digitise it by saying there are only two sexes; while this many be helpful for teaching four-year-olds, it becomes a mark of ignorance if it is carried into adulthood. If that ignorance is then preached as the truth, it is called bigotry. If that bigotry is then used to enforce how other people are allowed to live their lives, it is called "common sense" by politicians. -- ~ Liz Tuddenham ~ (Remove the ".invalid"s and add ".co.uk" to reply) www.poppyrecords.co.uk

Medical anomalies apart - XYY chromosomes etc. - I think biological sex is binary. Mental gender, on the other hand, is a spectrum, ranging from very male through neuter to very female. It would be helpful if we used the words 'sex' and 'gender' for these two somewhat independent things. I suggest there are four variables in the, er, sex vector: biological sex; mental gender; sexual orientation; and - what to call it? - presentation, how one presents oneself to the world. So Anne Lister, for instance, might be (female, male, lesbian, androgynous). > If that ignorance is then preached as the truth, it is called bigotry. > > If that bigotry is then used to enforce how other people are allowed to > live their lives, it is called "common sense" by politicians.

I don't think it's quite like colours. "Total number of people whose bodies differ from standard male or female[:] one in 100 births" - <https://isna.org/faq/frequency/> (Intersex Society of North America) If 99% of people are XX or XY, then the remaining 1% are anomalous. "Something that is anomalous is different from what is usual or expected" - <https://www.collinsdictionary.com/dictionary/english/anomalous> Our genes' (unconscious) goal is to reproduce themselves (they are 'selfish genes'). The method they use is sexual reproduction, two sexes, so binary. When our genes construct us, they have two-sex reproduction 'in mind'. This is fundamental. Our XX-ness or XY-ness is unchangeable, inscribed in every cell of our bodies. I actually expected you to object that biological sex is not just our genotype, but also our phenotype. This will naturally vary more (some are more endowed than others etc.), and we can tinker with it with hormones. I don't think there are 10b ways of looking at it. Our genotype, anomalies apart, is binary; our phenotype fuzzier, more variable. I think if I wanted to argue that biological sex is non-binary, I'd start with our phenotype.

I would start with the British Medical Association who have said that the concept of "Biological sex" is "bioligically nonsensical" and "scientifically illiterate". The only people who seem certain that they understand sex as something simple and binary, are those who don't know much about it. Biologists who have spent their lives working in the field are far less certain they understand it. The most famous type of slime mold, Physarum polycephalum (commonly known as "The Blob"), has 720 different sexes. But that does not necessarily say something about humans. So a medical doctor might be more appropriate than a general biologist when people want to talk about humans. Language scholars agree that common English is not "wrong" when it differs from science; it simply operates under a different system of meaning. A chemist might laugh and say, "All food is organic because it contains carbon!". However, the common English meaning of "organic food" is "food grown without artificial chemicals or pesticides".

Well, for another example straight from /biology/: A "fruit" is the seed-bearing structure that develops from the ovary of a flowering plant. This includes tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini, pumpkins, and bell peppers. So, you're right: If we discuss the scientific subject among biologists (disclaimer: I'm not one of them), we /should/ use the above scientific meaning. But, otherwise, when it's about meals, fruits are sweet plant parts eaten as snacks or desserts. Vegetables are savory plant parts eaten as part of a main meal. (Pedants love to declare, "A tomato is a fruit, not a vegetable!" Economically and culinarily, they are wrong [in the U.S.]. In 1893, the U.S. Supreme Court (Nix v. Hedden) legally ruled that tomatoes are vegetables for trade purposes because language must reflect how people actually live, cook, and eat.) (While I am truly no biologist, I did at least attend a seminar on bioinformatics a long time ago, where I also gave a presentation.)

I don't mean to suggest that Mme Hibou is a horse (her "Neigh!" was more likely "Nay!"). She's fond of horses and - probably rightly, though there may be arguments both ways - feels that eating one's friends is bad manners. Interesting linguistic point: dog-meat is fed to dogs, but horse-meat isn't fed to horses.
