Firemen normally put fires out, but some seem to have the wrong idea. A part-time fireman at Fontainebleau has admitted using petrol and a lighter to set fire to twigs in the forest there. There are big fires there now, which will take weeks to extinguish, because of the peaty ground. « [...] un pompier volontaire à Fontainebleau a avoué avoir "mis le feu à des brindilles avec un briquet et de l'essence" [...] » - <https://www.franceinfo.fr/faits-divers/incendie/les-incendies-dans-la-foret-de-fontainebleau-sont-fixes-mais-pas-eteints-quatre-gardes-a-vue-encore-en-cours_8108075.html> I seem to remember there was a case last year of arson by a fireman. I suppose they played truant during the induction course and have missed the essential idea. As I recall, the job of the firemen in 'Fahrenheit 451' was to burn books. Setting fire to forests may be taking this a step further; it's burning the wood before it's made into paper.

It seems that some people join the fire brigade because they are fascinated by fires. In a couple of instances, someone started a grass fire, then called the fire brigade; but the conditions were such that the fire had meanwhile gone out of control. > As I recall, the job of the firemen in 'Fahrenheit 451' was to burn > books. Good point. I suppose they were 'stokers' on ships. > And nowadays those whose job is to put fires out are more commonly > called "firefighters". That could be political correctness, or it could be to ensure they've understood the job. The crossover was in ~1980 in AmE, ~1998 in BrE: <https://books.google.com/ngrams/graph?content=firemen%2Cfirefighters&year_start=1800&year_end=2022&corpus=en-GB&smoothing=3&case_insensitive=false>

I saw a tv program once where a selftaught expert demonstrated how he could start a fire which he could control and thus avoid an uncontrollable wildfire. The Florida Forest Service issues permits for about 88,000 of these a year. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Controlled_burn While they are beneficial, they often cause highway problems when the smoke impairs vision on major routes.

Called "backburning" in Australia. Ideally it's done a little before the bushfire season, to reduce the fuel load. When a dangerous fire is actually burning, the backburning creates a scorched strip that (we hope) the main fire cannot jump. This is now harder to do because of changes in the climate. You can't do it in wet weather, but when the dry weather comes there's a serious risk that your controlled burn will get out of control. Bushfires these days run a lot hotter than they used to. -- Peter Moylan peter@pmoylan.org http://www.pmoylan.org Newcastle, NSW

About 40 years ago we had a brief holiday in a nature reserve where a postgraduate student was doing research of the effects of fires and public perception of fires in such places. His thesis was that fires were necessary to stop natural grassland from turning to scrub, and that public perception that fires in nature reserves were a Bad Thing needed to change. Of course such burning needed to be controlled, as it could prove disastrous if it spread into neighbouring farmland and pastures and destroyed their winter grazing. -- Steve Hayes from Tshwane, South Africa Web: http://www.khanya.org.za/stevesig.htm Blog: http://methodius.blogspot.com E-mail - see web page, or parse: shayes at dunelm full stop org full stop uk

I'd say that it's not that those terms are "not acceptable" -- it's that they're now often inaccurate. This isn't a huge deal for me, but not everything needs to be viewed through culture-war glasses. Some of us prefer to use accurate rather than inaccurate/ill-fitting names for things. Anyway, hasn't "chairperson" largely been supplanted by "chair"? -- Cheers, Harvey

The term for police now seems to be "LEOs" Law Enforcement Officers.

It isn't inaccurate to call a woman a man; it's just using 'man' in its original, Old English sense of 'human being'. "The Lord had but one paire of men in paradise" - Bishop King, 1597. 'Man' has two basic senses, both of which go back to OE (OED): human being and male human being. The latter has come to the fore, and so people perceive terms such as 'chairman' to be sexist when technically they are neutral. I believe the Women's Institute used to have 'chairmen' (I can't for the moment find confirmation of this), and I recall Victoria Coren Mitchell, who I think is pretty feminist, declaring on TV that she was a man in this sense - this in a BBC series about the OED (was that 'Balderdash & Piffle' in the Noughties?) Neither the WI nor VCM were in error.
