As of 2025 it has been legalised at last for the most notorious case,
the Parisian Boulevard Peripherique, [1]

There's filtering and filtering. Weaving in and out of traffic at high
speed is unlikely to end well. At the opposite extreme, filtering
through stationary traffic where the lanes are wide, e.g. on a motorway,
is fairly safe.

In slow traffic, filtering is legal in the UK. It's mentioned in Rule 88
of the Highway Code, which is tacit approval.

Until some driver opens his door because he wants to see why the traffic
is not moving.

Ah. Lane splitting. Legal in California, but not in all states AIUI.

It's really, um, distracting when the splitter revs his engine by the
driver's shoulder.

I assume US drivers who live on or near a state border have to keep in
mind which side of the line they are on and hence what is, or isn't,
legal at that point on the road.

There are generally physical clues as to where the line is.

I used to frequently pass from Oregon into Washington (I lived in
suburbs on the south side of town, and the border was on the north
side. I did not have a driver's handbook for Washington, and had no
problems. Currently I am involved in treks into Arizona ... that
border is 4 hours away by freeway, but a lot of SoCal people are on
that road. Haven't run across any particular issue.

Most states buy into the Uniform Traffic Code, whose content is
negotiated between the Feds and said states. Differences often are
related to what types of vehicles are allowed, special parking zones,,
turns in certain situations, and some special signage.

Of these states I'm familiar with, I believe Oregon is the only one
that allows "triples" ... a semi truck rig with a tractor and 3
trailers. I'm not sure that 50-ft trailers are allowed in that
configuration, but haven't looked it up recently. What's fun is trying
to pass a triple on a rainy day. Oregon gets plenty of rain.

For frequently violated laws or whatever the state's current safety
push is, there are typically signs at major crossings reinforcing what
the state's rules are.

>Most states buy into the Uniform Traffic Code, whose content is
>negotiated between the Feds and said states.

No, the feds have no involvement in model state laws. In this
particular case, quoting Wikipedia:

The Uniform Vehicle Code (UVC) is a model act developed by the
National Committee on Uniform Traffic Laws and Ordinances
(NCUTLO), a defunct private non-profit organization. Most of
the members were state governments, in addition to some
related organizations. The extent to which the code is used
varies by each state, territory, and Native American tribe. It
	was last updated in 2000.

Although the UVC was broadly influential, virtually all
American jurisdictions extensively rearranged, renumbered, and
rewrote various UVC sections in the process of enacting
them. One example of the resulting complexity is that in 1979,
the NCUTLO needed 262 pages just to explain all state-by-state
variations of each section of UVC Chapter 11, Rules of the
	Road.

The feds do have involvement in other aspects of traffic laws,
generally by threatening to pull federal highway funding if the state
does not adopt the law Congress wants. Thanks to a century-plus of
federal aid to state highways, the states are functionally dependent
on this funding to maintain their roads, and the feds (initially
through the Bureau of Public Roads, now the Federal Highway
Administration in the Department of Transportation) have a substantial
role in setting standards for traffic control devices (signs, pavement
markings, signals), bridge construction, and pavement quality. Using
its interstate commerce power, Congress also directly preempts state
laws on vehicle construction (so there can be a national market in
cars and trucks) and requires full interstate reciprocity in licensing
recognition.

Only those on motorcycles can travel between lanes, and it's common to
them do it. If there's no law against "splitting", a traffic ticket
for "reckless driving" can be issued.

It's difficult for a LEO to catch one, though. A biker can travel a
great distance before the LEO can mount a chase, particularly when
traffic is congested, and that's when bikers tend to "split".

I see far more motorcyclists going significently over the speed limit,
weaving in and out of lanes, and "splitting", but see very few pulled
over by LEOs.

I'd never seen/heard the word "filtering" in this context, but "lane
splitting" is quite familiar.

The most reckless motorcyclists - from what I've seen - are not Harley
riders. They're on "crotch rockets" (Japanese motorcycles). Harley
riders tend to ride in packs, but they observe the speed limits.

There's a lot of motorcyles on the roads in Florida, particularly
during "Bike Week".

This is not the only reason emergency services workers call motorbikes
"donorcycles".

A burn-up on my bike
Tah's wha' I like.

Just for kicks
I ride out through the night
My bird hangs on in fright ...

When that song first appeared, I didn't understand some of the terms. I
had a mental picture of a cyclist pedalling like crazy on a freeway,
with a scared cockatoo hanging on to his shoulder.

I saw 'bird rack' already used in some source from before WWII,
when 'birds' were more often called 'flappers',
(not really nice)

Going by Google that meaning seems to have been entirely forgotten,

Another forgotten one from that era was "Manhole covers" = sanitary
towels.

It's not unusual here to have a roundabout above or below a major
highway, acting as an interchange between the highway and a surface
street. Here's an example:

https://www.google.com.au/maps/place/University+Dr,+Newcastle+NSW/@-32.8967929,151.6949117,382m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m6!3m5!1s0x6b73157e63e65c19:0x9f5fd66bac4e7376!8m2!3d-32.8965137!4d151.7031595!16s%2Fg%2F1vk6zd2r?entry=ttu&g_ep=EgoyMDI2MDcwNy4wIKXMDSoASAFQAw%3D%3D

The entry and exit ramps slope between levels, of course. It's less
obvious from the picture, but there's also a pedestrian/cycle path built
into the structure, which much of it hidden underneath the roundabout.

Yes. I'd call that a multi-level junction, to distinguish it from one
where everything is at ground level.
