"par, pour" in French and "por, para" in Spanish provide a good example. They occupy basically the same territory in the two languages, but they divide it up somewhat differently. -- athel Living in Marseilles for 39 years; mainly in England before that, with long periods in Singapore, California, Chile and Canada

I doubt it. I think it's mainly a Germanic feature. For a start, it concerns separable compound verbs, which have no equivalent in Romance (in Slavic? In Hungarian perhaps?). It doesn't work with inseparable verbs, that do have counterparts in Romance, but which doesn't apply here. BTW how do compound verbs 'work' in North-Germanic? AFAIK there are inseparable verbs German style, but no separable ones: instead of those there would be phrasal verb types a la English (which in fact would have copied them from Scandinavian, to replace its once native separable ones). Moreover from the lesson texts I've read at some time, compound verbs seem to be completely unpredictable (as is dependent clause order: now German-like, then English-like). -- guido wugi

It's the same in Danish, but I still feel that one "til" is enough. Having the extra one could be the first step towards the verb getting unsplittable. To me it seems rather a case of equal particles by coincidence. If they were different, both would be necessary. If there is no adverbial group, the verb prefix has to be there as well. In Dutch moreover an adverbial prefix may be different from its preposition: (prep. / adv. prefix) tot / toe met / mee Examples: Toevoegen tot een verzameling. (to "join to" "to a collection") : add to a collection. (Except that 'tot' here would surely be replaced by 'aan') Meekomen met mij. (to "come with" "with me") : to come with me. (As in your tilføje example, an adverbial prefix is absent in English). -- guido wugi

Ok then: are there any compound verbs taking stress on the verb part, not on the prefix? If so, I 'hope' they're not separable, or we would have another verb family. So anyway, from what I saw I gather that - separable verbs behave like phrasal verbs in English, which would indeed have adopted them from Scandinavian; - inseparable verbs still [always?, sometimes?] take stress on the first syllable = prefix, contrary to G/D. >>> but then it would be clear how. >> >> or where. I guess you meant 'unclear'. > > No. I meant that the context would have made it clear how. Of course, a transitive verb (also when compound) needs only a direct object, no adverbial group needed. -- guido wugi
