I had to look that up. For me an afrit is a sort of demon.

The pairs 'oprit/afrit' and 'inrit/uitrit' both exist,
but they don't mean the same.

'Oprit/afrit' go on and off a motorway.
'Inrit/uitrit' are from the public road to and out of private property,
lika drive, or an industrial area.

An 'inrit' may have some kind of barrier, like a 'slagboom'.
(or a 'bareel' if and only if you are in Belgium)

Quite a productive quartet:

In-, uit-, op- & af-
gang;
komst;

zetten;
leveren;
leggen;
geleefd;
zien, zicht;
tekenen;
kijken;
keer;

Or in, out, up, off?

They're tricky twins with treacherous traps.
Some examples D/G:

opsluiten: to lock up, incarcerate
aufschliessen: to open, to "un-shut" (but litterally "shut up"!)

opmaken: (a fan of meanings) make up, dress, squander, garnish, draw up...
aufmachen: to open (D: openmaken)

inhoud: content
Inhalt: id;
But
inzet: (action) effort, mobilisation; insert
Einsatz: id °

All prepositions and alike are tricky:
aan/an, met/mit °, door/durch vs. van/von...

° Dutch has no separate adverbial prefix "ein" for "in".
And German has no separate adverbial prefix "mee" (< mede) for "met":
meekomen, kom mee: mitkommen, komme mit, come with [...].

Prepositions generally is a poisonous area for foreigners. There wil be
a large overlap between Dutch, German, Danish, English pairs of this
kind, but hardly a perfect match with any of them.

Yes, prepositions are the most difficult words to translate, because there is
rarely a 1:1 correspondence between different languages. "par, pour" in French
and "por, para" in Spanish provide a good example. They occupy basically the
same territory in the two languages, but they divide it up somewhat differently.

You can find equally productive pairs in Danish - and I suppose in many

I doubt it. I think it's mainly a Germanic feature.
For a start, it concerns separable compound verbs, which have no
equivalent in Romance (in Slavic? In Hungarian perhaps?).
It doesn't work with inseparable verbs, that do have counterparts in
Romance, but which doesn't apply here.

BTW how do compound verbs 'work' in North-Germanic?
AFAIK there are inseparable verbs German style, but no separable ones:
instead of those there would be phrasal verb types a la English (which
in fact would have copied them from Scandinavian, to replace its once
native separable ones).
Moreover from the lesson texts I've read at some time, compound verbs
seem to be completely unpredictable (as is dependent clause order: now
German-like, then English-like).

I'd be surprised if Uralic languages had this feature. I'm pretty
sure Finnish does not. (I flipped through my copy of HANDBOOK OF
FINNISH VERBS and didn't see anything.) Uralic languages tend to
elaborate case systems and postpositions,(*) rather than prepositions,
so they are even more distant from the verb than in German.

-GAWollman

(*) In Finnish, postpositions typically license the genitive or the
partitive, sometimes both with different meanings for each. There is
a theory that Uralic case systems are the result of postpositions over
time becoming attached to their complements as endings, and some cases
so formed subsequently falling out of use and being replaced by new
postpositions.

A professor (of formal semantics) taught us that prepositions and
cases are semantically the same type of thing.

The general rule is that compound verbs can't be split. I may look like
they can, but with a split the meaning changes. There are, however, some
that can be split. I can't say how many. Examples:

opløse = dissolve
løse op = loosen e.g. a knot

udtage = select (a team for football WC)
tage ud = knit an extra mask to widen the knitted item

Splitable verb:
tilføje = add

   	Føj et link til dine bogmærker.
   	Tilføj et link.

Today the verb is seldom split for some reason. And in the unsplit
version people miss a specification, so the common way is:

   	Tilføj et link til dine bogmærker.

where "til" is repeated.

"Maske" is Danish. The word is "stitch".

Where is the stress? Op? Løse? How say "I dissolve this, erm, thing."?

Stress? "I select a team"?

Stress?

"I add a link to my bookmarks"?

Yes but, mutatis mutandis, in Dutch one° would belong to the verb and
the other°° to the *adverbial compound*:

Toe°voegen aan°°: ik voeg een link toe° *aan°° mijn bladwijzers*.

On the first syllable.

> Op? Løse? How say "I dissolve this, erm, thing."?

   	Jeg opløser sukkeret i kaffen.

You could say just:

   	Jeg opløser sukkeret.

but then it would be clear how.

On the first syllable.

   	Træneren udtog spillere til landsholdet.
   	The coach selected the players for the national team.

Close "Tilføj" is imperative. Such a message might appear in an
explanatory text.

It's the same in Danish, but I still feel that one "til" is enough.
Having the extra one could be the first step towards the verb getting
unsplittable.

I use Opera for Android, and when I open a page, I can select to add a
bookmark or shortcut. The menu point is "Føj til ..." and three options
appear if I select it.

Hm, in Dutch (and German) that would imply a separable verb, which
"oplossen, los op" is in any case.

So if it were unseperable, oplossen would take stress on "los": "op*lø*se".

or where. I guess you meant 'unclear'.

Yes but one is an adverbial prefix of a verb, the other a preposition in
an adverbial group.

To me it seems rather a case of equal particles by coincidence. If they
were different, both would be necessary. If there is no adverbial group,
the verb prefix has to be there as well.

In Dutch moreover an adverbial prefix may be different from its
preposition: (prep. / adv. prefix)
tot / toe
met / mee

Examples:
Toevoegen tot een verzameling.
(to "join to" "to a collection") : add to a collection.
(Except that 'tot' here would surely be replaced by 'aan')

Meekomen met mij.
(to "come with" "with me") : to come with me.
(As in your tilføje example, an adverbial prefix is absent in English).

No. The stress would be the same.

No. I meant that the context would have made it clear how.

Ok then: are there any compound verbs taking stress on the verb part,
not on the prefix? If so, I 'hope' they're not separable, or we would
have another verb family. So anyway, from what I saw I gather that
- separable verbs behave like phrasal verbs in English, which would
indeed have adopted them from Scandinavian;
- inseparable verbs still [always?, sometimes?] take stress on the first
syllable = prefix, contrary to G/D.

>>> but then it would be clear how.
>>
>> or where. I guess you meant 'unclear'.
>
> No. I meant that the context would have made it clear how.

Of course, a transitive verb (also when compound) needs only a direct
object, no adverbial group needed.
