Or it [absence of a 'not'] was an early instance of a Freudian slip.
Given the current state of adultery, it is proof that Freudian slips do
matter.

Hmm. What is the current state of adultery¹? Is it increasing? Is it
usefully driving economic growth (all those little gifts - and big ones
too)?

I personally think it's about the same, but people are hiding it less
and less. So if you actually look in the data, you might -- and pro-
bably will -- find it's increased.

Of course, that's just a personal opinion, and since both modern and
historic data is often /missing/ [1] your guesstimate is as good as
mine.

Best wishes, and happy marriages!

"Adultery" is defined as "consensual sexual intercourse between a
married person and a person other than the spouse".

The number of couples that live together in a long-term relationship,
but do not marry, is increasing. If one of people in that arrangement
has consensual sexual intercourse with a person other than the person
they live with, is it still "adultery"?

Good point. It can't be adultery. It's probably coveting thy neighbour's
ass.

Why "ass"? Most men covet the front side of women, whether they're their
spouses or not.

Faut tout t'expliquer ! It was a joke. Perhaps you've lived too long in
Germany….

1. We're in the realm of the commandments, which express disapproval of
both adultery and coveting neighbours' asses (meaning the animals).

2. The sense of 'ass' in a sexual context is rather fuzzy; it's most
often the rear but may include other desirable elements - e.g.:

"[...] (in a sexual context) the vagina; occas. the penis [...]" -
<https://greensdictofslang.com/search/basic?q=ass>

A note on spelling: 'ass' not 'arse'? Has to be. Spelling must yield to
humour, l'humour doit l'emporter sur l'orthographe. This does involve a
bit of soul-searching, it's true. Have I been unfaithful to my Englishness?

And then - I couldn't bring the words to mind before - and then there
are synecdoche and metonymy.

There. I feel better now.

I would say "yes" because it's still liable to ruin the non-married re-
lationship.

And, while it became the new normal to live together without a priest's
blessing, people do take their love life just as seriously as in ages
past.

That is to say, /not at all/ for some people, and /very seriously/ for
others.

Best wishes, and happy marriages.

"Irreconcileable differences", actually, is the usual definition,

I would go for deliberate. I think that an "error" that would amuse a modern
typesetter would have amused a 17th century typesetter. We're not that different.

Yes. At work, we used routinely to produce documents in which only some
pages carried text or graphics; the others had "This page intentionally
left blank" on them. One day, proofreading, I changed an instance of
this to "unintentionally" and sent it back to the word-processing pool.
The operator was kind enough to include this 'correction' (she did
remove it again on the next iteration, before the document went out).

A sort of inter-office wink. The Sinners' Bible is much better.

As I recall it, the printer was heavily fined and lot his printer's
licence. An expensive joke, if it was a joke.

Fortunately, we now live in a world without printing licenses, and can
print our own copies -- which I am not inclined to do.

You could even sell your printed copies, if you care to.

Best wishes, and happy bibles!

Given that this was in the 17th century, he was probably very lucky to
have escaped being the centrepiece in a barbecue.
Humour and Religion did not mix well in those days.
