Since we joined the Common Market (later EU) in the 1970s the SNP's slogan was "independence in Europe" - an argument against the assertion that Scotland would be economically worse off and less secure separate from England. But now Scotland would have to apply to join the EU, and if that was successful face a hard border with non-member England. Several EU countries have regions with independence movements and as a result would have been strongly opposed to an independent Scotland automatically being a member even before Brexit - they don't want (for example) Catalonia to think it would work. -- Richard
