Serious answer: https://nrich.maths.org/articles/history-negative-numbers Although the first set of rules for dealing with negative numbers was stated in the 7th century by the Indian mathematician Brahmagupta Smart guy, that Brahmagupta. He probably kept on subtracting units from a set of 0 members and realised that such situations also needed to have numbers.
