There was an offer of asylum in the UK but
News of the offer provoked uproar from the Labour Party and many
Liberals, and the British ambassador, George Buchanan, advised the
government that the extreme left would use the ex-tsar's presence
"as an excuse for rousing public opinion against us".[138] The
Liberal Prime Minister, David Lloyd George, preferred that the
family went to a neutral country, and wanted the offer to be
announced as at the request of the Russian government.[139] The
offer of asylum was withdrawn in April following objections by King
George V, who, acting on the advice of his secretary, Lord
Stamfordham, was worried that Nicholas's presence might provoke an
uprising like the previous year's Easter Rising in Ireland.

Nicholas II approved of anti-semitic pogroms, Russification of
Finland, and shooting peaceful protesters; and he said "I want
everyone to know that I will devote all my strength to maintain, for
the good of the whole nation, the principle of absolute autocracy, as
firmly and as strongly as did my late lamented father."

I never said he wasn't also a murderous thug. I would have had no objection had they given him a fair trial. Like the later Nurenberg trials. Note that lots of Nazis were hanged, but not their wives or children. (Though some of the worst Nazis killed their *own* wives and children when defeat became inevitable.) Nicholas II's wife and children were completely blameless, hence should not have been killed. -- Keith F. They were considered a risk of being the rallying point for more
counter-revolutionary recruitment, innit?

Don't think so. They could have stayed in Paris, in the Tuileries, and could have accepted to become constitutional monarchs. One cannot know what could have happened next. Their attempt at flight was considered to be treason. It led to their conviction for it after due process, and to their execution, not to a murder, Jan

Charles I was executed in 1649. All the royalists in that period would have called this murder, since Charles was an absolute monarch and insurrectionists could have no authority over him. -- Sam Plusnet

Fortunately, we still have a transcript of his trial. It makes fascinating reading. -- Keith F. Lynch - http://keithlynch.net/ Please see http://keithlynch.net/email.html before emailing me.
