I see iron - pig, cast, and wrought - as an old, basic product, and steel as more advanced and controlled, developed for hardness and strength in tool steel, rust resistance in stainless, and so on. (I saw an advert for Irn Bru a couple of days ago - "Made in Scotland from girders," is the claim. It's decades since I've tasted Irn Bru, but as I recall, it tastes of bubblegum, not iron. It's a perfectly foul concoction.)
