You aren't allowed to use force unless they do, or you have reason to think that they will use force, and then the force must be proportionate to the danger. In other words, if the burglar assaults you, you can defend yourself, including using deadly force if you have reason to believe they intend to injure or kill you. If, when challenged, the burglar runs away, you can't try to kill them. I think you'd be allowed to chase them and use a certain amount of force to restrain them until the police arrive, though.
