#8508 — Notes for 36ABF19 (Simpsley)

The summer of non-canon back end streaming exclusive holdovers 
continues. As a non-canon episode this was pretty decent, especially 
since I was lucky enough to realize what it was spoofing as I pondered 
the -ley in the title for the nth time and realized it was the only 
character name not simply copied over in the first few minutes. 
Actually, realizing it's The Talented Mr. Ripley occurred to me shortly 
before noticing the letters in the name. (I am only familiar with the 
1999 movie, not the book or its other adaptations/followups.) With that 
pat on the back out of the way, I think it did a pretty good job, adding 
more dramatic irony at the end than I seem to recall from the source 
material, character gags not bad (but Wario... paging Family Guy), etc. 
Interesting stylistic choice to make it ALL black and white (except for 
one part, and, oddly, the end logos; FG's 2021 noir episode used B&W 
there!). I don't know who chose the secondary end credits font for the 
crowded pages, but it doesn't really fit.

BUT SPEAKING OF TEXT: it took me several hours from sitting down to 
finally finishing watching as I tried troubleshooting (and experiencing 
some other unrelated setbacks), because of a GLITCH in the D+ 
presentation. (I am trying to keep my thoughts on the episode separate, 
but I'm a little cranky.) Did this happen to anyone else? Forced 
captions, the kind you normally would get to translate onscreen text 
while listening to a dub, kept popping up despite my settings and 
despite the fact that I was listening to the English audio of an English 
language show, and English subtitles like these simply have no need to 
exist, let alone be forced on! There were many in the first minute or 
so, and they vanished after I reloaded the episode, but a batch of half 
a dozen or so from "art junk" about 4.5 minutes in all the way through 
the end of act 2 did not disappear no matter what I did. Different 
devices, rounds of updates, even a step where a support representative 
refreshed my account or something and I had to log back in... nuttin'. I 
hope this gets fixed swiftly.

very similar to impersonating Mr. Burns at the post office (except he 
remembered the first name!)

Chalmers makes a joke calling Simpsley a primate, though humans are 
primates. Perhaps excusable in the same way calling someone an animal 
can be an insult, but still worth spreading the word on.

I suspect that becoming a Disney entity has done nothing to help this 
trend.  Old, classic Disney aside, they tend to break just about 
anything they touch nowadays.

Good news and bad news.

The good news is that, some time between the 9th or so and the 13th, the 
subtitle glitch got (mostly) fixed. I see now that Lisa has a line in 
Italian when she first appears and this is subtitled in English, as a 
closed caption, so maybe that has something to do with the 
erroneous/redundant subs. However, it loses major style points for not 
being part of the episode itself. And I say it was mostly fixed because 
I still saw at least one (new!) wrong caption - in this case, a few 
frames of a line of dialogue just inside the bank, which did not appear 
when I went back later. Weird.

But the bad news: in that same time, D+ modified the way credits are 
handled in a way that so far seems to have no remedy and I consider 
completely unacceptable for presentation (especially presentation of 
something that's supposed to be exclusive to this platform). Previously, 
soon after the credits began, they would shrink into a tiny window so 
something else could be promoted (and possibly autoplayed); selecting 
the credits to bring them back and rewinding (to any point) would stop 
it from happening again during that playback session. NOW, in a browser 
it shrinks them every time; on Roku (for me anyway) it pops up a 
gigantic ribbon of recommendations (which takes a few clicks to dismiss 
because first it becomes a for-you button in the corner), better than 
shrinking but also not possible to forestall by letting it happen once. 
Also, I haven't looked at other episodes, but this happens extremely 
early, before even the cast credits begin - in fact, it's on the last EP 
card, which also means the gigantic promo popup covers some of the text!

Only time will tell what happens next. I have already complained to the 
company, for whatever good that will do.
