Carlos,
You make a baseless claim, and then you HIDE behind it
o You don't defend your baseless claim, since you can't.

It's no different than saying I beat my wife.

And then when I respond that yours is a baseless claim
o You hide behind the fact that I called your bluff.

THIS IS A FACT CARLOS:
o You made a baseless claim (multiple times).
o And then you hide behind it.

It's no different from me asking you...
*When are you going to stop beating your wife, Carlos?*

You may consider being called an idiot not to be an insult,
but if that is the case then you are an idiot.

Othewise his claim is not baseless.

If you mean some other claim he made, and you want that claim
addressed, then you should not have deleted it, either.

We are not talking about nntp servers which 'publicly show'
(unencrypted) NPH.

We ARE talking about nntp servers which do show NPH encrypted.

I do NOT believe that decrypting that information is trivial.

Use as examples mixmin, individual, and eternal-september. I name those
3 text nntp servers because you are using mixmin, I'm using individual,
and eternal-september is a popular free text nntp server.

Mixmin does not require authentication and it is free. e-s does require
authentication and it is also free. NIN does require authentication and
it is not free.

All of them allow posting and all of them encrypt the connecting IP.
Most nntp servers with a couple of exceptions which allow posting
require authentication.

You are saying, "I prefer to connect to mixmin using VPN." I am saying
"I don't yet understand why you prefer to do that."

That question in my understanding of what you are doing is NOT an attack
on privacy strategies in general, in spite of the fact that you choose
to mischaracterize it.

I am further saying or questioning, "I don't even know whether you are
preferring to access mixmin via VPN for purposes of concealing your
(personal) IP from the admin of mixmin or whether you are preferring to
access mixmin via VPN for purposes of concealing your *encrypted* IP
from the usenet header readers at large."

So, having this discussion with you is like trying to debate an
undefined point because you refuse to define your purpose in.

Further, you are not a civil discussant; you insult, belittle and act
rudely with ad hominem slurs. Those behavioral traits reflect badly on
you, not me, so you are the unfortunate and pitiable one for doing so.

Mike,

There is a simple 3-word test for ignorant bullshit, Mike:

Q: Does a free proxy even exist to post using free nntp news servers?
A: *Name just one*

The obvious point is that you're not having a "discussion", Mike.
o You _never_ intended to have a "discussion" Mike.

And it's not a different "point of view" Mike.
o You're spewing unrelated off topic completely false statements Mike.

Read the opening post, please.
o Pretty please.

Mike, I _beg_ you to read the opening post.
o Please.

Please Mike, read the opening post.
o Specifically, read the SUBJECT line, Mike.
o And then read the closing line, Mike.

Is that opening post NOT extremely clear to you Mike?
o Seriously. What are you so CONFUSED about, Mike?

It's really an extremely SIMPLE question, Mike.

This is the extremely simple question in the OP, Mike, is it not?
Q: Does a free proxy even exist to post using free nntp news servers?

*Name just one*

Apparently "Mixmin". Also, Eternal-September.

However, do note that your use of the word "proxy" in this instance is
somewhat incorrect, and that may be leading you down the wrong paths,
arlen.

So, before going further, I suggest that perhaps you take a step back,
and find a different word than "proxy", as NNTP transfer is more akin to
SMTP than one of the various protocols that can be (and are) proxied,
such as HTTP.

Technically, you didn't send an email. Might wanna remove this sig from
NNTP postings.

Hi Carlos,

Be an adult, Carlos & realize _why_ the thread was opened, Carlos.
o Adults use FACT + LOGIC..

FACT:
o I knew the (likely) answer when I asked the question, Carlos.

LOGIC:
o The answer proved Mike's keyword trolling was complete & total bullshit.

Q: Does a free proxy even exist to post using free nntp news servers?
A: no

I now leave this thread to the trolls who infested it long ago.

The question has no answer because you do not define what Proxy means to
you, or "free nntp news server" means.
Is posting via a vpn posting with a free proxy? If now why not? If so
your question has been answered.

Hi William Unruh,

Accuracy _and_ repeatability...

I am an adult, educated, as are you well educated.
o This isn't my first rodeo (nor yours) with keyword troll bullshit.
o The strategic point was to validate a keyword trolls' bulshit.

Hence, I only speak two things:
FACT + LOGIC

HINT: I never bullshit(1)

Since you're well educated, you know what I mean when I say:
o I'm far too well educated in the sciences to resort to bullshit.

I don't need bullshit to prove my point, William, like Mike resorted to.
o My belief system is based purely on actual FACTS + adult LOGIC.

I back up my facts, and, in fact, in thousands of posts (let Cybe(r) Wizard
count them), I've _never_ once been wrong on material facts, William.(1)

I've written peer-reviewed papers William, just like you have.
o My credibility is stellar, William Unruh.
o Nobody has _ever_ found a material fact I've stated wrong.

And trust me, the have tried (they'd _love_ to find me wrong).

Do you know why they can't find me wrong (except on typos)?
o It's because I _only_ speak FACT + LOGIC William.

Facts are funny that way.
o Hence, the answer to your question is in the factual history...

FACT:
*1. I wrote this quick to-the-point VPN basics for beginners*
o How to get up & running on a free public vpn service in minutes on Android or iOS
<https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/comp.mobile.android/Bv8bwG4ggnc>

*2. Mike Easter keyword trolled that thread, posting this article:*
o Don't use VPN services.
 <https://gist.github.com/joepie91/5a9909939e6ce7d09e29>

*3. I immediately reviewed the facts in Mike's article as the following:*
<https://groups.google.com/d/msg/comp.mobile.android/Bv8bwG4ggnc/oAPYdk4QEgAJ>

Mike Easter _continued_ to incessantly keyword troll the thread, in
essence, ruining itfor beginners (which was, likely, Mike's intention from
the start for all I know, since nothing Mike said passed even the simple
3-word ignorance test).

Bear in mind that the thread Mike keyword trolled wasn't trying to be
controversial; it was just a two-step beginner tutorial for Christs' sake.

But the keyword trolls _always_ respond _only_ to the keyword:
o In this case, Mike's long-ago-prepared spiel was "against VPN".

*Every single time keyword trolls "see" the keyword, their spiel ensues!*
o The keyword trolls don't even _read_ (nor comprehend) the topic!

They're like a cat pouncing on a laser beam...
o All that matters to keyword trolls is that the keyword was moving!

Since Mike refused to comprehend that the proxy his article suggests
doesn't likely even exist, I brought that exact question over here, and let
Mike know I did that (since I am an adult).

I _knew_ the most likely answer - but - being open to facts, I asked:
Q: *Does a free proxy even exist to post using free nntp news servers?*
A: *no*

You see, William Unruh, like you, I'm very well educated, where I _only_
speak FACT + LOGIC, and _all_ my facts are easily validated & verified.

Accuracy _and_ repeatability...

--
NOTE 1: Since I'm human, and since Usenet is a casual medium, I must have
been wrong at least once on material fact in thousands of posts; but nobody
has ever found it (rest assured, they've tried, where all they can do is
play silly semantic games with the facts).

He gave an alternative viewpoint that using a VPN as a glorified proxy
(as your posting advocated) wasn't necessarily the best idea, and backed
it up with a post on github.

>
> Bear in mind that the thread Mike keyword trolled wasn't trying to be

Really, the issue is advocating a glorified-proxy-VPN for various
reasons.

The ONLY thing it does is hide your activity from your ISP -- and in
many cases, just gives it to the VPN provider. You gotta ask yourself
if you trust the VPN provider more than the ISP (and yes, there are
instances where that may actually be true).

> But the keyword trolls _always_ respond _only_ to the keyword:

Actually, it was against using vpn *as a glorified proxy*. That last
bit is key.

Proxies exist. Not for NNTP, but they definitely exist.

Seems you didn't comprehend the article Mike Easter linked, as it was
talking specifically about using a VPN as a glorified proxy for
web-browsing (and further admitted that there are times when it's the
only option).

That article that got arlen so upset wasn't a particularly good article,
but the lengthy comments section debating its point-of-view brought it a
much better balance. The author did use an inflammatory title, 'Don't
use vpns', but the reason I cited the article (as well as its comments)
just like the reason I had previously cited a much better website TOPS
was to try to bring some balance to all of the hype about VPNs.

I didn't think arlen's 'tutorials' were addressing the need for that
balance or VPN 'wariness'.

Not so good article; but lotsa comments:

As always, it depends on what you are trying to protect yourself from.
The article says that the VPN provider is a weak link, and you cannot
and should not trust them to maintain your secrecy. And that VPN
providers are more likely than most providers to be up to no good.
The first is certainly true, the second probably.
So, it is up to the user to decide what it is that they need to protect,
and what adversaries they want to protect themselves from. If it is from
the US government, they are in trouble, as almost anything they do can
be circumvented
Here we are talking about usenet posts. They are by definition public,
so it is not the content that is being protected. So it seems it is the
source of the post that is being protected, by someone who does not want
to identify themselves. If it is because they want to protect their
nymshifting, I have no sympathy. If they want to remain anonymous from
the public because of danger to them (eg posting news that the
government does not want broadcast), then posts via a vpn in a foreign
country might work, although the traffic from the person's machine to the VPN
will still be discoverable. But of course that would be true for any
"proxy". If it is protection from other random readers on usenet, then a
VPN is almost certainly adequate, since the VPN proivider is not going
to divulge the info to any random person. If they promise not to log
traffic, then responding to anyone withthe information would too easily
give lie to their promise.

Anyway, if anonymity is your requirement, then you have to spend the
time and effort at first asking who you are protecting yourself from,
how many resources they have or could want to devote to discovering who
you are, and how best to protect yourself.
If you are just paranoid, then there is no solution at all, since any
defence can easily be overcome by the "enemy" and so resistance if
futile.

What I'm seeing is a wave or a sea of hype. I believe the natural
behavior of 'the masses' is to sense all of the hype about VPNs and to
decide to 'look into' what it is all about. That causes them to search
on VPNs or search on free VPNs or best VPNs or whatever so that they can
get started in the 'right direction'.

That process leads them in the wrong direction -- not a good thing.

For exercise, I just searched on free vpn and a high ranking hit was
"Top 7 (REALLY FREE) VPN Services That Still Work in 2019" from a site
specializing in vpn stuff.

That site is actually shilling for a couple of non-free vpns to steer
the reader toward a free trial of non-free. How likely is the overall
advice or article to be good?

In any case, as with many other things, the journey is difficult, truth
elusive.

It is worthwhile discussing or debating about these things but arlen
isn't the one to be doing it with.
