You know it is a site run by a security researcher how? Because the site says so? And noone every lies on the internet? All sites tell the truth? I have no idea whether or not this site is legitimate or not, nor whether it has sufficient security walls around it to prevent either him or a hacker from using it to obtain probable passwords. Why would anyone base their argument on the identity of the author if they’d looked into the real confidentiality characteristics of the site? -- https://www.greenend.org.uk/rjk/

It doesn’t transmit the candidate password to the server, it transmits a truncated hash of it. See the privacy link[1] from the same site, and use your browser’s debugging tools to verify what is in request it actually sends. Yes, that site makes much more sense of the security than all of the other pontificating here about how wonderful Troy is and how trustworthy (and also points out that this is NOT how his first version operated.) I would be far happier about using version 2. making sure I only sent the first 5 characters of the hash > > [1] https://www.troyhunt.com/ive-just-launched-pwned-passwords-version-2/#cloudflareprivacyandkanonymity >

At https://haveibeenpwned.com/Passwords checking for "abc123", it fetches https://api.pwnedpasswords.com/range/6367C as described. Cool. Unfortunately the same care isn't used for the overall search at https://haveibeenpwned.com/ which fetches https://api.haveibeenpwned.com/unifiedsearch/abc123 So be wary. Just because a known researcher put up one arguably safe service doesn't mean everything they do is safe. It's "just" an email address search, but that can be a private bit of info too. e.g. I use a different address for every account. Also, I'm sure lots of people will plunk in passwords and account names despite the placeholder saying "email address". Also, he seems to really push a particular password manager brand, only lightly alluding that there even are others.

I agree entirely on this point. The trouble becomes when you've forgotten that you were a member of $webForums and now seeing that your email address got compromised, but not knowing it was on _that_ site; so your compromised account continues to be, well, compromised there. -- |_|O|_| Registered Linux user #585947 |_|_|O| Github: https://github.com/dpurgert |O|O|O| PGP: 05CA 9A50 3F2E 1335 4DC5 4AEE 8E11 DDF3 1279 A281

Usually that's true. However, haveibeenpwned does give list of the sources of where the email had been seen (e.g. linkedin) if it's seen a specific site's breach. So, if you see that linkedin, myspace, etc have been implicated then they'd be a good start to change. >>> If I knew the platform, >>> there would be no need to change passwords everywhere the ID is used. >> >> the platform doesn't matter. >> >> if your email or password is in their list, you're at risk for being >> pwned if you haven't been already. change passwords *now* and enable >> real 2fa, not the sms crap. > > I agree entirely on this point. That is true. However, if you change the password for all those that you *do* remember then you can guarantee that the unknown compromised site won't be a vector to your other sites. This is why I have an email address that I only use for sites that I don't trust and it's never used for anything remotely important. If I forget what sites I've used it for, it doesn't matter. Nowadays that's unlikely as I use a password manager and I know exactly how many that is.
