*AHA !!*

I've got it. Enigmail's menu has a properties function which displays
the fingerprint, which fingerprint is the best of all worlds, better in
terms of specificity than the short or the long keyid.

And, the fingerprint 'contains' both; the short is the last 8 chars, the
long is the last 16.

Yes, the information can be displayed, at least after downloading the
key. But one has no control on which is used when one tells Enigmail to
download the key of a message you have just received.

If I'm understanding the debate between long and short correctly, and if
we were having a round table discussion of our points of view, I think I
would disagree with the concept of 'never use the short form'.

The keyservers use the short form.

I believe that the most comprehensive strategy in such example as you
are giving is to use the short form to 'find' they key, in some rare
circumstance possibly finding more than one, and use the FINGERPRINT,
not the long form, to verify the correct key.

The fingerprint is stronger than the long form. The short form is more
convenient than either.

Got your key. Just learned how to import them via the command line.
Nice. So I removed the longer signature as that's obviously my own
rookie mistake and not needed.

If you edit the gnupg-1.6.6.sl script on line 173 to read

  Prefs["append_sig"]     = 1;

it'll fix the "- --" break for your signature delimiter as well. The
script is a little less than helpful in this regard, as reading through
makes it look like openssh / openssl / etc config files where the
settings have contextual comments telling you what's going on.

Okay,

I'm giving that a shot here...
