This thread is related to the one of "moving home"

Assume that I had moved it successfully

I have (simplifying to the minimum)
Disk A : Debian (with /)
Disk B : HOMES
(with subfolders :
* Debian/home/Mario_1 dedicated config files of former
debian/home/mario,
*  MX/home/Mario_2, empty
* SharedDocuments (full of common data)
)
Disk C : swap (now for Debian, tomorrow for every distro)
Disk D : Empty

I'd like to Install MX Linux on Disk D: (all of it), but I'd
like to have MX/home not on disk D: but on Disk B: (Homes)
... but, and this is my main worry, besides use it as is (no
formatting) I would want "D:"/home/Mario to be placed in
"B:"/home/Mario_2, that is created SIDE BY SIDE another home
and not rooted in the top level folder of the device, but in
a subfolder of my choice

I have never seen such options on any installer ... is it
there some way to do this on install (choosing mount point
manually) ? It would avoid moving later ...

I dunno if I've been clear :\

I used the A, B, C, D windows-like designation for
shortness, in place of some /dev/sda etc
TY

Why all these threads about the same thing? Is this thread 3 or 4 about
moving home.

It's possible, but messy to have a home directory name other than the
user name, the problem you will encounter is that the graphical
interface that you install with will most likely not support this.

I do suggest you make your installation, without chaining anything. When
you do the first boot of your newly installed distro, boot into single
user mode.

  1. Mount the /dev/sdd to /mnt
  2. move the /home/<username> to /mnt/Mario_2
  3. adjust your fstab to mount /dev/sdd to /home
  4. adjust the passwd to have /home/Mario_2 as your users home directory
  5. reboot

You could of course use bind mount the /dev/sdb/home/Mario_2 to
/dev/sdd/home/<username>

If you use the command line installer, then you can use useradd to
create your user and set the home directory location with the option -d

Not when you mess things up with microsoft, make it unclear, did some
assumptions and fixed your text.

I don't see how the now common millenial habit of moving back home after
college is relevant in a technical newsgroup.

What is messy about it? It is trivial. You can put home whereever you
want with any name you want. You just have to remember to tell the
system where it is ( by editing /etc/passwd and sticking in the correct
name for the home directory for that user).

Whetehr or not the gui gives this option is the gui's problem, but I
suspect most allow you to so.

Don't.

Let each Linux installation have its own different /home directory or
partition. Do not share the /home/user directory across different
installs, it causes problems.

Instead, create another partition, say /Documents, and share it using
symlinks

/home/USERNAME/Documents --> /Documents/USERNAME/

/home2/USERNAME/Documents --> /Documents/USERNAME/

/home3/USERNAME/Documents --> /Documents/USERNAME/

I'm sure this has already been explained to you.

Well, I do not know about anyone else, but I am getting kind of tired
of your requirement/problem. You have been told how to share user
data between different installs, and whatnot.

My recommendation, create a VirtualBox machine, deb_mx, with a
GPT 25gig drive, use the systemrescuecd iso, create three partitions,
10 gig ext4, for each OS, and remaining space for shared.

Go ahead and name the partition and label each, say, deb, mx, shared.

In the root terminal, mount the shared partition, create whatever
sub-directories you think you want for whatever the hell setup you want.
umount the shared partition, shutdown deb_mx.

Load debian iso in cdrom, and install it, picking whatever you can
access/set with the installer.

Shut deb_mx down. I would clone deb_mx to deb_mx1.

load mx iso in cdrom in deb_mx1 and do the install.
That way if you screw up, you can delete deb_mx1,
clone deb_mx to deb_mx1 and try the install again.

If successful, delete deb_mx, then you can rename deb_mx1 to deb_mx
and have a machine/guest you can experiment on.

That will give you a feel for what is going to happen on your real/host
machine when you go to install MX.

I presume that you actually mean /home/Mario_1 and /home/Mariao_2
and the Debin and HOMES are the labels of your disks. Those disk labels
have NOTHING to do with the path of the filesdirectories in Linux.

And same with MX.
Ie, these are all just part of /home.

NO, YOu are dreaming in Microsoft, not linux. You have to mount the
partition you call D somewhere in the filesystem. Lets say /local
Then you might have a directory under /local/ called home, so
/local/home.
rsync -aHv /home/Mario_1 /local/home
would tralfer all the conten of the directory Mario_1 (including the
directory itself) to /local/Mario_1. Since /local/is on partitoin D that
data would all be on partition D.

No idea what you are talking about. What does "placed in" mean. D: is
different partition from B: and you cannot have something that is
simultaneiousl in two partitions.

no, Debian and MX are folders on the same disk
B: or better /media/HOMES

so maybe I should have written them as

/media/HOMES/Debian/home/Mario_1
/media/HOMES/MX/home/Mario_2

I dunno if the mid "/home" is still necessary, I just
assumed every hardwired path in config files could be a
relative path starting from home/sth ... obviously if it was
an absolure /home/sth (root included), this "trick" would
not work

tnx for precisation. But they were part of the paths (the
drive has the plural, HOMES, as a label, but I have not
added it to the path for the reasons you explained)

that the actual data would reside in partition "B:", at the
pathname D:/home/Mario_2 or translated in Linuxian
/media/HOMES/MX/home/Mario_2
(where HOMES is a device and not a folder, and one different
from root current target device)

I do want it just in D: not in 2 places ...

So far I still do not see how you are keeping the user's
Desktop Environment configuration files separate from each install.

Something else for you to consider is a big update, or next release.
Seen users complain new updates caused major problems.

If I were running these kinds of rolling release updated distribution
I would rsync "Production" install to new_and_improved partition,
edit its /etc/fstab, have grub update the boot menu, then boot it
and do the update. If it works, remove the old install.

Oops, forgot to add, and still share user data between installs.
