Message-ID<p2hrggl2n77ead71rpki06ipk2ar8ubr7r@4ax.com>
I have installed the latest versions of Mint (cinnamon) and Zorin.
Neither have arrows on scroll bars. This annoys the f**k out of me. I
got to use 2 hands to scroll web pages ib firefox and everything else.
If windows can do it, why not linux?

Maybe you should get a mouse w/ a scroll wheel.

That was the first thing I thought. I haven't used (or been interested in)
arrows in scrollbars for years. Probably about the time I started using a
mice with scrollwheels.

For me, it's hard to use scrollwheel. I prefer keyboards like arrow keys and page up/down.

I can see that also. I use the keyboard's up and down arrows sometimes as
well.

IBM laptop with built in mouse. You cant add a scroll wheel to that. And
while i could plug in a USB mouse, I do all my internet and most other
computer work in my vehicle. Using an external mouse is not an option on
a vehicle seat. Not to mention portability. When i go to a motel i dont
need a pile of accessories to lug in besides the laptop.

Not having used Windows, I have no idea what "arrows on scroll bars"
are. If I want to use a scroll bar in Linux (Mageia 8 in particular, but
it is not particular to that), I place the mouse on the active scroll
and drag it up or down with a left mouse button held down. Or I place
the mouse beneath the active part of the bar on the bar, and click and
down the page goes. (and up if above). What do you do with your two
hands while scrolling?

Wndows has scroll arrows at the top and bottom of the scroll bar (or left and
right as appropriate). I think you can click on these and it scrolls. Most UIs
no longer have this... you can just click and hold at the top or bottom of the
scroll bar to get a similar effect.

Ah. Well, Chrome,Chromium , Konsole, Konqueror, Okular, ... on my system have those arrows. Firefox does
not.
So, yes, Linux CAN do them.

You're like a shark in a goldfish bowl. We all see you there and tell you
as much. And you're so brain-dead you keep failing to see it. I guess this
is what arises when really poor self esteem takes over Commander Kinsey's
entire life. Clearly there are too many "works for me" people in this group
and not enough people with the skills to help the people with Macs. Commander
Kinsey is far too unintelligent to write a useful script. The only scripting
he's ever shown he can do is simple stuff I did years ago.

If I understand what you're talking about correctly, I believe you are
looking for something controlled by the theme / appearance of the
desktop environment.

<---###--------->

Scroll arrow (<), followed by scroll space (---), followed by the scroll
handle (?term?) (###), followed by more scroll space (---), followed by
another scroll arrow (>).

I too dislike not having the scroll buttons, be it up and down or side
to side.

> If windows can do it, why not linux?

Linux can do it. For some reason scroll buttons have fallen out of
vogue and people are hiding them.

Related: I also dislike the propensity that people seem to have of
hiding the scroll bar until you move the mouse into the area that it
should be in. When the mouse is in the magic location the scroll bar
appears.

I believe that these changes are being done in the spirit of trying to
reclaim screen realestate for things that some people feel is seldom
used, thus wasted. However, hiding them make the User eXperience much
less intuitive and requires more foreknowledge about the program.

Agreed. I hate these autohide features.

Translation: "Gremlin's imaginary friend HHI" is now COMPLETELY powerless

You saying something is so does not make it true.

Gremlin's imaginary friend HHI's posts are nothing but an indecipherable

Gremlin's imaginary friend HHI - who caused more issues applying his 'quick

You consider that your way of using a computer is the only one valid,
but it's wrong. You want to always display them, you do and it's good
for you. But for my part, I consider them to be useless so they are
never shown. I don't want to have them because you consider it's better
for some other guys. The possibility to chose is important.

They haven't fallen out of favor, they used to be there but are
less seen now. I totally agree with the OP's disgust. The problem
to me seems to be that devs are unilaterally migrarting the
entire GUI usability and intuitivness matrix to what will please
the overpopulated but intelectually handicapped mouseless texto
mob where the ad-revenue is totally oppressive.

Again, screen realestate too being far more valuable on
hand-held devices than on desktops or laptops, THAT is
where the problem lies IMHO.

I don't miss the the arrows on the desktop. I had forgotten they ever
existed. I'm so use to scroll wheels on mice that I completely get rid of
the scroll bar wherever possible — with editors and word processors.

I have a 22" monitor on my desktop... I still like as much "real estate" as
I can get. I don't like a tab bar in Firefox if only one tab is open — so I
get rid of it. I get rid of the title bar. I use the compact density so my
bars are narrower and I don't display the bookmarks or Menu Bar. If I could
get rid of the scroll bar altogether I would — but, as is, it's pretty small
and not too noticable.

Firefox is a screen hog, personally I prefer a full and real-path title bar
(showing the executable binary at work and THAT in case of ALL
windows), a URL strip, and a classical menu bar, and nothing else (up there).

For small things the scroll wheel is good. However if you have to get to
the later stages of a 40 page document, grabing the location bar on the
scroll bar and left dragging it down is far more efficient.
