In the 'long run' this machine is mostly going to be used in a
'non-portable' mode, as a small footprint way to mess w/ Win10 a little
bit and mostly boot various linux distros live to see how they do on the
hardware.

In that mode, it is only a few feet away from gigabit ethernet and wall
power. The laptop also has gigabit ethernet and it is currently running
off the AC adapter, so what's one more wire - and the connectivity will
be much faster than wifi.

But, I'm also going to continue to try to solve the variable Broadcom
wifi problem. I will also be shrinking the Win part to boot some
installed linux distro/s. This little laptop can 'compete' for position
w/ a lightweight Chromebox I usually take on trips. The chromebox
definitely has longer legs in terms of battery life because of the
combination of ChromeOS and eMMC storage whereas this new one is
spinning a disk and running more ram; I'm sure it will have less than
half the battery life.

Someone here recommends an Intel replacement for the Broadcom.

https://www.ctrl.blog/entry/replace-broadcom-wifi-with-intel.html

Those are tiny tiny looking connectors. No wonder they
regularly get squashed during install.

https://www.amazon.ca/AC1200-Wireless-7260NGW-7260AC-Network/dp/B07VCBRB4B

They make RP-SMA cables, but on a laptop there would hardly
be room to fit those on the chassis.

This lenovo laptop has poor connectivity performance including on ethernet.

My consistent cable connectivity on speed tests on other hardware in
Mbps is ~ 200 down and ~ 12 up.

On the Lenovo, no matter whether the OS is Win or linux, checking 3
different speed test sites, the performance ranges 40-80 down, 12 up.

Its ethernet is reported Realtek RTL 8111/8168/8411 PCIe gigabit
ethernet controller using r8189 driver in linux.

The topology is the same for the good results as the poor ones, to a
gigabit switch on a gigabit router to the cable modem.

First thing I would check is _any_ nic errors.

 ifconfig enp3s0 | grep err
        RX errors 0 dropped 0 overruns 0 frame 0
        TX errors 0 dropped 0 overruns 0 carrier 0 collisions 0

I had poor performance with single digit number here and there.

after playing around with iperf I changed out the cheap ethernet cable
to a higher quality and got much closer to my gigabit lan speed.

Tnx. That test/check is OK.
