There are some options on this page. I've never tried any of them but some
of the choices look interesting.

I find it very handy and highly compressive VOKOSCREEN (and
seldom use Record-my-desktop).
Voko also mix the webcam windows and supports audio capture
from different sources.

Note : if you strictly screencast the compression ratios are
amazing, but even a little webcam window on an apparently
uniformly white piece or paper which you write upon, causes
a sharp increase in size.
The different shades of white produced by natural light,
even if meaningless for human eye, are numerically different
and produce much more "noisy" information to manage.

For the same reason, if you are interested in deploying
videos on free accounts with low space avail, consider
monocolor desktop background in place of gradients (worst of
all natural photographs)

Most, if not all, screen capture utilities are nothing more
than wrappers around ffmpeg, and therefore it behooves the
user to just learn ffmpeg.

Ffmpeg is also more versatile in that it can utilize the
hardware encoders of Nvidia cards (nvenc) to offload the
capture from the CPU.

Screen capture with ffmpeg is best done in two passes:

1) lossless capture (possible with nvenc) at high speed
but big file sizes.

2) compression of the lossless capture to a more suitable
format.

The two-step procedure takes a lot of time but produces
the best overall quality.

Learning ffmpeg may require a bit of time and effort but
the end result will be an immense technical enrichment.

The user will be able to approach digital video processing
in general with confidence, creativity, and understanding.
He will no longer be dependent on "black box" methods.

Of course some people do not seek technical enrichment
and will choose to remain totally ignorant. For such people
there is Micr$oft and not Linux.

I like FFMPEG too, but there are limits to the
praise to be heaped on it.

If your capture doesn't have good lip-sync (audio
and video not aligned), sometimes this is not easy
to fix. There can be wander and not an offset between
the two. Perhaps the timestamping system can be
enabled to fix that.

Since the capture is not synchronous to the screen,
and the sampling has jitter in it, you can see problems
if you look closely enough.

Would *any* competing method be better ? Dunno.

I can tell you a "hardware capture card" would at
least solve the synchronous problem. There are some
overblown cards available now, with their own compressor
in hardware. (The Black Magic card only did MJPEG in
an FPGA, while some of the new cards have a separate
H264 or H265 capability.)

Oh come off it. Don't act like a little baby. Manypeople use linux to ge
things done, not to learn Linux, and that is a perfectly valid attitude
to take to an operating system. Just as you have problably never taken
apart an automatic transmission (Jut think khow much you would learn by

intricacies of ffmpeg to do video editing on Linux.

You can compare the result to SimpleScreenRecorder.

https://www.maartenbaert.be/simplescreenrecorder/

It even has its own screen capture routine.

m_x11_image = XGetImage(m_x11_display, m_x11_root, grab_x, grab_y, grab_width, grab_height, AllPlanes, ZPixmap);

It's best not to take F. Russell too seriously. He's kind of hung up on
himself. And you're absolutely right, Linux is not just for those who want
"technical enrichment" (as if that's a goal unto itself), it's also for
those who need a solid OS platform for general computing.

In the amount of time that it required for you to compose that silly spiel
you could have learned a few things about ffmpeg and video fundamentals.

Oh well. It's your loss.

you appear not to know the concept of "EROEI" and to
consider any time-investment worth while regardless of the
actual return.

And also that time spared somewhere becomes available to be
dedicated to other knowledge with a higher priority

since I mentioned VOKOSCREEN, I must say it is just
"overkill" as is for my needs. It is already toom much
flexible and options rich (codecs choice, sampling rate
choice, and much more), so if it is overkill, why to look
for over-overkill ?

There are infinite shades of gray spanning from the video
editor professionists to ones that simply have to make some
default video to share some content

It has nothing to do with a non existing absolute concept of
ignorance. I mean, with that absurd point of view I should
consider ignorant everyone who does not master the chemistry
of carboranes of sulfur-nitrogen superconducting thiazil
polymers, when this is rather lack of specific interest.

Every one simply looks for tools with reasonable learning
curve as noobody is immortal and has unlimited time available.

think again about the concept of absolute vs subjective
priorities ...

GNU/Linux is how technically oriented people have _fun_.
Yes, GNU/Linux is all about having _fun_ through DIY tinkering
and exploration.

Learning ffmpeg is not the issue. Learning video fundamentals
*is* the issue, and ffmpeg affords anyone the opportunity to
explore video processing concepts.

We have all experienced the automated, amateur efforts that
are posted to sites like YouTube. The results are atrocious.
Audio levels are severely inconsistent and video is always
substandard. The best "point and click" software just cannot
make up for the ignorance and incompetence of these posters.

There is a reason that civilized human beings are required to
attend school for many, years. Civilized societies desire people
who understand where they came from and how the world works.
Most schools offer courses in chemistry although perhaps not
as a requirement. But considering the extreme importance of digital
technology to our current and future world an education in
computer science should be absolutely mandatory.

nope. There are many kinds out there, some of them
invaluable. It's the content rather than the aspect the value

not a point. If you want to learn welding or building sth in
DIY, you find a lot useful tutorials. They don't need to get

I share chemistry lessons on vimeo, for example, and video
quality is less than negligible for the purpose

it's not of particular intrinsical intrest for everyone
actually.
And most educational official agencies even ignore linux as
a whole.
I mean : last year I completed EIPass course, no linux
program was even mentioned.
I'm not saying I was happy with that, just that priorities

I agree, where I disagree is the focus of it. Deepening in
the ffmpeg options is simply crazy for a general purpose

I hope that you use GNU/Linux tools for the purpose.
A lot of people publicly praise Linux but in private
they use Micro$oft/Apple for the supposed convenience.

I have produced videos of atomic orbital construction
using GNU/Linux Maxima (for solving the Schroedinger
equation), Geomview (for AO visual animations), and
ffmpeg (to capture it all).

These officials have never even _heard_ of Linux.

If they have heard about Linux then it was Ubuntu, and Ubuntu
is *not* representative of Linux. Ubuntu is a cheapened and
bastardized

Actually, GNU/Linux is the best possible educational tool because
it utilizes only international standards such as C. IOW, GNU/Linux
tools are relevant anywhere.

In contrast, with Micro$oft, the student will have to confront
the proprietary C# garbage.

almost always (for recording vokoscreen)
for animations OpenSCAD

There is a SW still impossible for me to surrogate :
ChemSketch from ACDLabs. A Linux version is still awaited.

But I use it in virtual machine "offline", to prepare
documents, then I load from sambashare in LbO.

I also don't have so much power and memory to record lesson
in Linux, LbO and browser and OpenScad, and also keep
running a virtual machine.

I have sieved the net like a desperate, but even the second
best SW found (ChemAxxon Marvin) does not fit my need like
the aged ChemSketch.

Also Hyperchem 8.0 is a SW I use sometime to make computations.
There many linux alternatives exist, but often either too
powerfull (they demand too high computational power and do
modellization much beyond my basic needs) or simply I don't
know how to use them due to interface. Avogadro seems good,
but I'm not able to exploit it. With my "old" hyperchem I
waste no time and I have a model to view and animate.

In university many linux sw is used for more refined models,
but there they have plenty of power

i find it a ridiculous behaviour.
When I had to critize linux, I did openly

I try to get the best of both (as I have regular license for
win 8.1 and XP), but honestly now upwards of 95 % of time I
stay just here. Only two software now keep me bound me to
windows world.

I have limited power, just enough to use "balls and springs"
approximation.
At Univ. they used LAMPS, GAMESS, but for well higher
results. I teach in a high school, not in university, and
for my students rough models are just too much

Debian comes with a very rich set of educational tools in
the native repo (and many more are available).
I find that linux world pays much more attention and care in
edu areas.

uhm ... I happen to "hate" ubuntu, but you seem a bit
hydeological in this judgment

I'd like to learn sth about SCORM packages, but I did not
find good documentation and neither a good authoring tool.

My School is starting to try using MOODLE (they will
invariably fail, but seem not to know yet), and I've read it
supports importing SCORM packages, very widely used in the
non free courseware world.

LOL :) ah, I forgot one third SW I cannot do without :
Visual Studio.
To me one of the smartest, fastest ever, handy tool for
editing, compiling, debugging, all in one.
But I've never ever tried to use it out of its native OS.
Maybe I will never manage to try sth like that

Best to ignore this thread.
My bad.
