Mike & William & Paul & Carlos,
(You're the only adults on this thread)

I wasn't going to respond anymore to this thread because the worthless
trolls have long ago taken it over, and, besides ... the original post
clearly was stating that Mike's article's advice to use a proxy instead of
a vpn was "nice words", but completely non actionable in the case of Usenet
posts, which is _why_ I use VPN.

Proving that FACT was the main purpose of this thread
o Although I would have been ECSTATIC had a proxy actually existed!

I'm writing below to EXPLAIN the obvious to you since...
o You don't seem to comprehend _even_ the most obvious of the obvious.

As William Unruh noted, my intent in changing headers (one of which is the
NNTP posting host, obfuscated or not, and static or not) is not to hide
_content_ from the public since Usenet posts _are_ public, where, I assert,
if it takes you more than five seconds to figure out my posts, then you are
an idiot, since my posts are clearly and easily discernable.

Despite that I never troll, you can _claim_ all sorts of nefarious purposes
for me to want to NOT posting using my personal IP address (the same
address of which I've had for about a decade now)... but you may as well
claim that I'm beating my wife, since you have _zero_ evidence for any
veiled or open claims of nefarious purposes.

I proved to Mike with reliable cites that NOBODY NEEDS TO DEFEND their
right to privacy, if you, Mike, or you, William, want to take away my right
to privacy, then you have to show us good reason for you to want that,
given I never troll

NOTE OF THE OBVIOUS FOR UTTER IDIOTS (for Christs' sake):
o If I wanted to troll, I would post to threads _other_ than my Q&A threads
o If I wanted to troll, I would bring up Trump or some other mining topic
o If I wanted to troll, I'd have field day with the likes of Dan Purgert, et al.

I'm not even going to go into all the idiocy that you guys spew for WHY you
think nobody on this planet should have any right to privacy, which both
you (Mike) and William intimated with your "nym shifting" insults.

The fact is that I have posted (oh shit, Cybe(r) Wizard is gonna make me
count them) many many many many many thousands of posts to Usenet over the
years, Mike and William.

I'm so sick and tired of _explaining_ this, simplest of simple things to
people like you Mike and William that I wonder if there are _any_ adults on
Usenet who can comprehend even the simplest of the simplest of use models.

For Christs' Sake, Mike & William - use your adult brains for once!
o Please think like an adult thinks (not like those idiot trolls think)
o Please realize we're talking NNTP header privacy, Mike & William
o Please realize the BODY isn't what we're privatizing - it's the header!

For Christs' sake ... why can't you _comprehend_ something _that_ simple?
o This isn't quantum physics you know

This is really freaking simple stuff, Mike & William
o If you don't understand header privacy - then ... you understand nothing.

Again, this isn't string theory William and Mike
o If you can't comprehend header privacy - then - you comprehend nothing.

What on earth is so "complex" to you guys about header privacy?
o My problem with all your crap is that you assume nefarious purposes
o It's like saying nobody needs privacy because everyone beats their wife

What you guys (Mike & William) are saying is that everyone beats their wife!
o I _expect_ the trolls to say idiotic things like that, Mike & William

But I expect you two (and Carlos), to act like adults
o If you think I'm beating my wife, then prove that I'm beating my wife

Otherwise, STOP assuming header privacy is ONLY for nefarious purposes.
o The concept of header privacy is not quantum entanglement, guys.

The concept of header privacy is fifth-grade simple stuff Mike & William
o I _expect_ Purgert, Wizard, Rene, Wildman, et al. to NOT comprehend it

But I expect adults like Mike, William, and Carlos to comprehend it
o Changing the IP address is a basic component of header privacy

If you can't comprehend something _that_ simple, Mike, Carlos, & William
o Then I posit you have absolutely no right to discuss VPN vs proxy
o Since changing a header is trivial compared to the topic of VPN vs proxy

The main point here is that Mike's article advised using a "proxy",
and yet, for Usenet header privacy, nobody can _find_ any proxy that
exists.

Hence, the article suggested completely unworkable bullshit.
o It's like the article suggesting that light can exceed the speed of 1
(William will understand that statement.)

If you want to show that light exceeds the speed of 1, then you have to at
least show one example, in empirical results, that shows it happening.

If you can't find even a _single_ proxy that can replace using VPN as a
"glorified proxy", then the "advice" to "don't use VPN - use a proxy"
is comlete total and utter bullshit.

I am a well educated man, as you are aware - and I do NOT bullshit.
o My material facts have _never_ been proven wrong

I do NOT bullshit.
o I would LOVE to use a proxy instead of a VPN for header privacy

But the proxy suggestion instantly FAILS a simple 3-word test:
o Name just one

--
Note 1: In thousands upon thousands upon thousands of posts over the
decades, I must have accidentally been wrong on material fact at least
once, since Usenet is a casual medium and since I'm only human, but the
point is that my credibility is stellar on FACTS + LOGIC (which is all I
ask of you).

That is a useful site and has variable free proxies. The 'real-deal'
the site offers actually has a price ranging from $5.6-8.5/mo depending
on the length of pay period.

"Free proxies are usually slow, unstable and die fast. It takes much
time to find new working proxies every day.

Our product My IP Hide can save your time (life). It uses our private
proxy servers. We manage and tune them to ensure they are always working
and fast."

Most importantly, what your message conveys is a 'correct'/accurate
rebuttal to arlen's repetitive diatribe. (with limitations, which his
VPN solution ALSO has).

You don't have to use that list. There are scores of socks proxy lists
all over the place. Just install and configure proxychains (which uses
tor by default) with whatever proxies you want. Works just fine.

proxychains(1) proxychains(1)

NAME
ProxyChains - redirect connections through proxy servers

SYNTAX
       proxychains <program>

DESCRIPTION
This program forces any tcp connection made by any given tcp client to
follow through proxy (or proxy chain). It is a kind of proxifier.

It acts like sockscap / premeo / eborder driver (intercepts TCP calls).

This version (2.0) supports SOCKS4, SOCKS5 and HTTP CONNECT proxy
       servers. Auth-types: socks - "user/pass" , http - "basic".

I don't know of you, so I take only what you write at face value.
o If what you suggest is ACTIONABLE, let's do it now.

It should take us all of a few minutes to get it up and running, right?
o Certainly the VPN solution is working in just minutes on all platforms.

What started this thread was a simple post that Mike saw where I wrote up
how anyone in five minutes could be up and running on VPN for free, on all
platforms, whether they be on Windows, Linux, Mac, iOS, or Android.

In five minutes, with just two "files", they could choose from any of
thousands of IP addresses in order to not show their actual IP address in
their NNTP headers.
1. They download a free text openvpn config file (I have six thousand)
2. They install any free openvpen client (works on all platforms)

It's really that simple to be "up and running" on VPN in five minutes.

My question to you is what steps can you provide to me, similar to the
steps that I provided in the original tutorial that Mike originally
responded to, so that I'm up and running on all platforms with this SOCKS
idea in a similar time frame and effort frame?

Let's start with Windows 10 and Android for now, and then Ubuntu 18.10.
o From years of experience, I have found most general-purpose
o solutions work best when that is the priority order.

What are the work-flow steps to get the SOCKS idea to run on all platforms?
o What are your suggested ACTIONABLE sequence of steps?

I only use Linux. I don't care about other OSes. Just install proxychains
and you're good to go. If you don't want it to use tor, just add a proxy
to proxychains.conf. Then, assuming pan is your newsreader, run:

$ proxychains pan

(Of course, you will have configured pan to connect to the appropriate
news server).

Hi Mike,

Again, I was NOT going to post more to this thread because the trolls have
long ago taken it over, but, as you know, I am always improving tribal
knowledge, which is how you saw that original tutorial that started this
mess. :)

The _first_ question to ask is HOW would this SOCKS proxy be used to be
able to change the IP address related NNTP header line to any of thousands
of possibilities?

I don't bullshit, Mike.
o If a _better_ general-purpose solution existed, I'd use it Mike.

I am _always_ seeking better general-purpose solutions
o If this "SOCKS" idea works, then let's work on that together, Mike.

As adults, Mike.
o That means we have to deal with actual FACTS & LOGIC, Mike.

For example, most (almost all, in fact) of my general-purpose solutions
work on _all_ platforms, Mike, which the OpenVPN + free NNTP server
solution certainly does.

That means the general-purpose PROXY solution must work on:
o Linux (mostly Ubuntu 18.10, for obvious reasons)
o Windows (mostly Windows 10, for obvious reasons)
o Mac (I won't be testing that though)
o iOS (mostly iOS 12.x for obvious reasons)
o Android (mostly Android 6,7,8 for obvious reasons)

Where do we start in finding a tutorial for this PROXY solution
o I'd start with Windows 10, as the first step
o Then I'd go to Linux
o Than Android

I'd tackle the Apple solutions later, since they're always harder.

Since I'm an adult, and since I do NOT bullshit, Mike, I readily and openly
admit up front that I haven't _touched_ SOCKS since, oh, I don't know (I
have to always worry about Cybe(r) Wizard counting the days), the last time
I had to get Pan to work on CentOS or Ubuntu, or whatever, with Mixmin.

If there is a _workable_ SOCKs solution, let's _try_ it Mike.

The _first_ question to ask is HOW would this SOCKS proxy be used to change
the IP address related NNTP header line to any of thousands of
possibilities?

Bear in mind the VPN solution, as a "glorified proxy", works fine,
where, as noted in the very tutorial which started this mess, consists of
only two things:
1. A free openvpn client, and,
2. A free openvpn protocol configuration file (which is a text file).

That's it.
o Yes, it _really_ is _that_ freaking simple.

It works on ALL (common consumer) platforms!

NOTE: The reason for "free" is clearly to be a "general purpose" solution,
and, less clearly, to avoid privacy complexities when cost is involved.

As you are aware, Mike, the current free VPN solution has over six thousand
different IP addresses to easily choose among, and a goodly number of
purposefully free NNTP services (each of which use _different_ methods on
the IP headers, so our solution has to take _all_ of them into account).

NOTE TO MIKE: You don't take the "general purpose" into account when you
speak of simply _one_ or a few of the NNTP services out there - we are
creating a general purpose solution that works for _all_ of them, Mike.

Since Windows is the starting point almost always, let me seek a
Windows-based SOCKS tutorial that we can refer everyone to as a general
purpose solution that works on all the platforms, eventually, which easily
allows the user to change the IP address related header to any of thousands
of possibilities.

No, you are not.

You have a very limited scope of an issue which is far from
'general-purpose' and which you have never adequately or properly defined.

It is limited, not because your target is a wide audience, but because
YOU are your own central focus, and you like to use all of the devices,
android, linux, win, ios, and mac; except that you mostly use win.

It is also limited because you have a very narrow minded approach to the
applicability of a 'solution' to your 'crazy' (limited application) idea
that you need to conceal your IP from your nntp server admin. Or
perhaps (alternatively) your (similarly) crazy idea that you need to
conceal your ENCRYPTED IP from usenet header readers. Either way, it is
NOT a 'general-purpose' idea at all. It is an 'arlen-only' micro-narrow
idea.

proxychains (per se) does not apply to all of your devices, but linux,
bsd, & mac. You would have to find similar proxy-strategy alternatives
for your other personal devices such as Win and android and ios.

Well, aioe has a limit of 40 posts per IP per day, so there are
circumstances, such as if you don't have a life, where it would help to be
able to connect with a new IP and exceed that limit. Also, since the same
IP will encrypt the same each time, if you want to have any sock puppets,
you'll appreciate the ability to have them come in on different IPs.

To that end, even if it's "defined", it's usually done so using the
wrong words ("Sliding files" comes to mind). And, when clarity is
sought, the requesters for said clarity are belittled for "not
understanding the brilliance" or some such.

But at least we can have our enlightening side-discussions :).

To that end, I haven't been able to find any resources that confirm
whether or not the nntp posting-host ID provided by Mixmin is derived
from the IP.

As it stands (from my POV), the current burden-of-proof lies with
someone saying it is derived from the poster's IP.

I've done a little more investigating of the various 'forms' of
information provided by e-s eternal-september, NIN news.individual.net,
& mm mixmin.

I think, but I cannot *prove* it (but some parts might be provable),
that there is some 'slice' or fragment of arlen's position or thinking
or POV that may be valid.

That is, I think the info in the NIN line is a complex mass of base64
which also includes the IP connecting to the NIN server; that the info
in the e-s line is also complex, with more than one 'complicating' value
besides the IP, and that the info in the mm line is simply such as a
hash of the IP and is not 'complex' as the others.

Thus, given the same connecting IP, that the info in the e-s and NIN
lines is going to vary, while the info in the mm line does not.

That makes arlen's exposed info more 'vulnerable' to cracking such as by
the adversaries he may create for himself on usenet by rudeness and ad
hominem slurs.

And, I believe that in the name of 'privacy' he chooses to use mm
because it doesn't require an account with authentication; but that if
his adversaries are actually the usenet header reader adversaries rather
than the nntp admin, then he might not have his priorities in the same
order that I would put them.

That is, I would pick an nntp provider that handled the info string
differently even if it meant I needed to register to get an account.

Yeah, which is why the burden of proof is "prove it uses the IP at all",
and not "prove it doesn't" (given the claims of course). Granted, this
is probably a trivial test -- but I'm not using mixmin, nor do I care to
poke at it.

Most likely it's the base64 encoding of some cipher, e.g. AES. However,
like I said before, the only source(s) that could confirm it would be
the relevant server admin; and chances are pretty high he has no
inclination to do so.

Don't even need to crack it. We could just email the mixmin admins and
say "hey, this posting-host needs a timeout" (or equivalent). :D

Or hell, just throw up a "proxy(tm)" on digitalOcean, and post through
there, and not worry about giving *their* IP to the world.

Granted that doesn't solve "but I wanna spam like mad, and not get cut
off", or other similar "bad intentions".

Well, if the server is using Linux it is then very possible that the
server is at least open source, then the method used to create that
header would be known.

Guessing, there would be some key file stored at the server, so that we
can not decode the string, unless an attack on it is known.

Given the myriad of encipherment options available, we could likely
narrow it down, but knowing the _exact_ cipher may get "fun". Not to
mention that even if we knew that, we need to know other details to
reverse it.

Ran a mixmin posting-host ID through a hash-check tool, and got 18
possibilities, including things like MD2(!!!) or DNSSEC/NSEC3.

Thats as much as I care about it though ;)

Yeah, we all know how difficult that is for you. Excuse me for using
words too big. I meant that we all know how hard that is for you to do.

BTW, don't mention me and I won't post about how you lie about your
supposed:
10,000 tutorials
Message-ID: <po4626$vpu$1@news.mixmin.net>

Each time you sidestep or ignore the disclosing of your lies you show
yourself to be the lying duplicitous idiot that you are, Arlene Holdout.

Here, once again, is a pointer to the biggest lie I know of that you've
so far told:
Message-ID: <po4626$vpu$1@news.mixmin.net>
You know the one; it's where you said that you've written TEN THOUSAND
tutorials.

Shut me up, Horlew, merely by showing that searchable list. Hell, just
show the list.

The instant that you show a viable list of TEN THOUSAND tutorials that
YOU have written I will shut up about it, I guarantee and promise.

Be a man and 'fess up to being a liar otherwise.

Failing to do either, you are just and only a liar. ...and not much of
a man, either.

If you do not want your address showing, tell your usenet software to
put in a fake address. As in my posts.

Well I think if there were a vote of all the people who have read this
series posts by you inthis thread, they would vote that you are
trolling. Just as claims of not doing evil things by VPN providers is
junverifyable, your claims about your own mental state are equally
unverifyable.

The only evidence I have are the posts themselves. For me that is
sufficient. Do you really want that poll of the readers to see what they
think?

Yes, I do believe in a right to privacy. But yes, people do and have had
to throught history, had to defend their right to privacy.

But then I never stated that you did troll. I said, if you are trolling
then I have no interest in helping you.
It is you that seem to be taking that to heart. And yes, if you ask for
my opinion, I do believe that you are trolling. But that is my opinion,
and and my having opinions is something else I do not need to defend I hope.

There are many ways of trolling. Your list is not exhaustive.

I think he's talking about the injection info -- such as what E-S
applies for you:

  Injection-Info: reader02.eternal-september.org;
    posting-host="03b7b748bb3b9208bd1b77b4f01b1233";
    logging-data="1582";
    mail-complaints-to="abuse@eternal-september.org";
    posting-account="U2FsdGVkX18xuIN6PSAS/FwdjlCmFZPH"

Specifically, the "posting-host" identifier. He seems to believe that
this hash can be reversed in order to get one's posting IP.

In our cases (as both you and I post via E-S), the authority of "how"
these are generated (and whether it's reversable) would be Ray Banana.

Yet, we're not in a "private" place when posting to Usenet.
Furthermore, I don't see Mike Easter attacking your desire for
"privacy", but rather exposing the fact that the "privacy services" may
not be doing what it is you think they're doing.
