Hi Mike,

Thanks for the additional info.
Until I _do_ it, most will be lost (except high-level direction).

I'm very familiar with Samba setup, as I connected Mac/Unix/Pc/Solaris for
years using a combination of CAP & Samba (smb.conf), oh, maybe a decade or
maybe even 15 years ago (I don't remember) where the Samba stuff was robust
then, so I'm sure it's robust now.

NOTE: I even have a few tutorials on the net, if I can find them
(given the privacy nyms are all random, I don't even know what they are.)

The CalDAV & WebDAV should be pretty straightforward too, I would think.
(I set up Apache servers way back when, oh, mid nineties?)

So I'm good to go.
Thanks.

Cool.

At first I tho't that was a Puppy/Slacko spin because of the
mascot/avatar animal at the site, but then I realized it was based
directly on slackware and Linux-Live scripts via Slax. I had previously
been looking around to see if anyone had made a puppy spin.

I like the idea of a text/script based interface for this purpose. That
takes advantage of the Webmin methods. I also like the idea that it
comes in a live boot distro to easily test.

For a while it was being actively developed, but now it has been a
couple of years since any releases and DW is calling it dormant. The
kernel of the last release is 4.4.22.

If you have someone like me who is inexperienced with working in the
command line, but isn't averse to it, they/I need help. It is like
languages. I can understand and read in a couple of languages besides
English, and I have a smattering of French vocabulary to get me around
crossword puzzles, but 'creating' ie speaking in those languages
conversationally is not available to me.

By the same token, I can 'read' and understand commands I find, except
if they have too much regex with which I am not conversant, but when it
comes to creating commands for/ to do/ something de novo, I'm not so hot.

So, a text based interface is a nice bridge for me between GUI and
command line.

There are some nice text based tools or utilities, such as the Alpine
mail/news agent.

Continuing to dabble in this SMS Superb Mini Server vein, and also the
vein of 'conventional' desktop distros for server function vs dedicated
server distro...

5 years ago, DW's Jesse Smith did a series to focus on servers for
home/office environment. His feedback surprised him, as the readers
requests were different than he expected.

In the first place, the requests for SMS were the most, not conventional
'mainline' server distros, for which there was little or no requests.
In the second place, the requests for 'server-ing' conventional desktops
were strong; he said "people looking for reviews of home servers seem to
be interested in ease of use and nice, graphical interfaces more than
performance. It also seems that traditional server distributions are
less appealing than people being able to run network services on their
existing desktop/laptop computers."

That article favorably reviews SMS 2.0.6 (and SME 8)

Now, y'see Mike, you're engaging in the "chit-chat model" of usenet, and
not ... blahblah.

Nice find :). Kinda wish this stuff was around when I was fumbling my

Yeah, it wasn't till wannacry that people really started taking SMVv2+
seriously outside of the business markets.

As for AH's router, he's gonna need something newer if he wants to use
his router for that purpose. Personally, I'd probably use one of those
spare boxes laying around ...

For those who have better ways to use their time...
https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822108690

In a couple of hours one could have lots of file sharing, calDAV, WebDAV
and other capabilities up and running.

 From the Newegg page:
Convenience
Supported Protocols
SMB, AFP, NFS, FTP, WebDAV, CalDAV, iSCSI, Telnet, SSH, SNMP, VPN (PPTP,
OpenVPN, L2TP)

If one wants to hack, go for it. I suspect more would like something
that just works.

Synology are nice and all, but honestly they can be (slightly)
infuriating. Though, maybe it was because I had a pretty early one. I
just run whatever service(s) I need on a spare box these days.

Hi Mike,
I know you to be purposefully helpful so I won't consider this a "trap". :)

> Win, and linux; and that about 20% of the time you are in linux.

My home network is an ugly kludge. Wires everywhere. Access Points (APs)
everywhere, inside and out, on the floor, on shelves, propped up in chairs,
etc. Laptops and desktops scattered about. A few gaming systems for the
grandkids in the basement too.

The WISP radio is on the roof. It's what you lucky cable subscribers might
call a "modem"; but it's actually called a "transceiver", although we just
call it a "radio" or, sometimes, less accurately, an "antenna". (The only
wires that come to our home is electricity - nothing else - although we
used to have landlines in the olden days.)

That rooftop radio gets the "Internet" from about 20 or 30 miles away by
road (I never measured it as the AP is on the top of another mountain), but
only a few miles (maybe 3? maybe 4? maybe 5? not more than that) as the
crow flies.

From there, the CAT5 cable goes down three floors to the office router.
At the office router is a rat's nest of cabling, since there are switches,
VOIP boxes, computers, printers, cellular femtocells, etc., attached.

Plus, there are cables (mostly attached to switches) that "go places".

One of those cables goes to a router in the basement another floor down,
which is set up as a wired repeater. From there, it goes to a plethora of
devices, such as gaming systems, access points, and another printer.

Back in the central office, there are cables that go outside, where there
are plenty of other access points (I have so many spare radios set up as
access points I'm not going to list them, as Cybe R Wizard and other
children will just play their silly childish semantic games attacking the
number, as if that is all that matters to them).

Here's a photo I took just now to give you an example (pardon the mess) but
these roughly two-hundred dollar radios are scattered all over the place
(each can go for miles at the legal power limit, and beyond, were I to
choose to do so).
  <http://www.bild.me/bild.php?file=3627024ap01.jpg>
Note at the left on the shelf the cellular repeater (I have both a cellular
repeater and a cellular femtocell, simply because the house is big &
T-Mobile gave them to me for free - which they don't normally give people
both.)

I have similar radios outside all over the place, pointing to the barn, to
the pool, to the cabana, to the shed, to the driveway gate, etc., and even
some pointing _back_ at the house (as it's easier to aim an AP at the side
of the house from outside than it is from inside, where bathrooms have
wall-to-wall mirrors that are amazingly impenetrative).

I have so many spare radios that even my desktops have radios attached to
their Ethernet RJ45 ports, e.g., here's the "dongle" attached to one of my
desktops, where that is a Microtik radio & router (which is what blocks all
NETBIOS traffic, by default) being used to pick up an access point that
happens to be rather far from that particular desktop (which that radio
easily does since it's designed to pick up signals from miles away).
 <http://www.bild.me/bild.php?file=2869934ap02.jpg>

Sure I could have plugged in a WiFi card, or even a WiFi dongle, but, hell,
I have so many far more powerful radios lying about, I may as well use
them. They were outdoors for years, so they're ugly & rusty - but they
cream anything a "normal" homeowner would have given Microtik allows _any_
power for any country on the planet which means they can be more powerful
than what is legal in the USA (not that I need that transmit power).

Most of the antennas are roughly 30dBi (give or take) alone, by the way, so
the can be EIRP is tremendous if I want it to be.

> It might be helpful to know the percentages for the other devices, just
> to get a sense of the balance of things.

There are a dozen or so hand-held devices which, of course, roam about the
house, half of which go outside the house (e.g., tablets & phones) of both
iOS and Android parentage.

There are a few wired desktops, even a few wired laptops, and then a few
laptops, some of which are Centos (old) and Ubuntu (old also), where the
desktops are all dual boot Ubuntu/Windows and the laptops are all Windows.
(Lots and lots and lots of "dead" laptops - I can't count them, in the
basement, there are so many, as I used to get one a year when I was working
and they never asked for them back - mostly Toshiba and IBM Thinkpads).
Even dead Macs, if I can dig them up.

The point is that if I _wanted_ a full-time Linux laptop or desktop,
I _could_ set that up - but I prefer my use model to be that I boot to
whatever OS makes sense for what I want to do.

Lately, that's more Windows than Linux, although it used to be far more
Linux than Windows. These things change over time.

Mainly, all the wired devices are Windows dual boot desktops, with dual
boot Linux being there when needed. Linux is great, for example, for
connecting the iOS iPad because it automagically mounts the iPad as a "usb
stick of sorts". Windows doesn't do that (the iTunes abomination isn't
allowed in my household.)

Most of the Linux is Ubuntu, which works well when I need scripting, and I
use it a lot for Usenet using Marek's scripts - but I'm on Windows for
Usenet too (which is why my scripts sometimes goof when they don't play
nicely with each other). The Ubuntu is designed to access Windows file
systems, which works great.

Sometimes I use a VM, but I kind of am soured on VMs over the years.

There is a "main" router, and an old router set up as a wired repeater, and
a few switches scattered about.

The LAN is super simple. Everything is on 192.168.1.x where the netmask is
255.255.255.0, where, oh, I don't know, there are, in toto, about a score
of devices connected at any one time.

While the laptops are linux and all the desktops are dual boot, at any one
time it may be Linux or Windows running, wired, or wireless that has a "big
keyboard". There are always plenty of Android & iOS devices 'connected' at
any one time also. The only things that stay on _all_ the time, are the
routers, and the transceivers (and access points).

Oops.

While the laptops are (mostly) Windows (some are Linux) and all the
desktops are dual boot...

In short, while the many access points are ugly, I think it's a "typical"
192.168.1.x/24 home network, is it not?

Barring the extra routers you have laying around that're breaking
things, it sounds pretty flat.

You do realize that it is _ILLEGAL_ to operate those in the United
States then, right?

FCC Title 47, Chapter I, Subchapter A, Part 15 covers radio
transmissions.

One of the provisions of Subpart A or Subpart C specifies that radiators
sold in the United States MUST be limited such that the end user has no
possible way for re-configuring for use outside the United States.

It came out of the early 2000s when WiFi first started getting big, and
people like you figured "oh hey, there's this channel 13 if I go to
Japan on my AP, and NO ONE IS THERE!!!"

I imagine there were usenet posts at the time concerning *BRILLIANT*
methods for finding unobstructed WiFi channels, and posters were
*SHOCKED* that no one thought of that before them.

>

Sure, with an ultimate legal limit of somewhere around ~60 dBm if
you're set up such that they're point-to-point (at least with 2.4 GHz.
5 GHz has three separate rules, and I don't wanna look them up). NOTE -
the math, of course, works out that you could reach closer to 100 dBm,
but the keyword in the preceding sentence is "legal".

Specifically, you have to reduce your conducted power (i.e. transmitter
output) by one (1) dB for every three (3) dB the antenna gain exceeds
six (6) dBi -- with the initial starting conditions being 30 dB max
conducted power + 6 dB antenna gain; totalling 36 dBm EIRP (4 Watt).

This is a stepped falloff, so

7-9 dBi gain --> 29 dB conducted power
  10-12 dBi --> 28 dB     "         "
  13-15 dBi --> 27 dB [...]

But for point-to-multipoint, such as if you're providing wifi access to
your phones / tablets / whatever; you are limited to 36 dBm.

I think it would be 'better' if one of the things that stayed on all the
time would be the equivalent of a server/storage which could be headless
or its equivalent (turn its monitor off almost all the time).

I understand having old hardware lying around that we like to make use
of instead of buying another piece or part, so it wouldn't be necessary
to obtain a Pi or other singleboard, just use one of the devices you
have for the purpose.

The device would run whatever linux you would like and its purpose would
be as a server and storage. The business about whether you want to
handle the central calendar and password business wouldn't have to be as
'restricted' as just storing a file because you have a ubiquitous server
that can serve all the devices whether they be running Win, Mac, iOS,
android or whatever.

Your 'favorite' Win machines or partitions could be turned on or off
whenever you like, but the device running linux server/storage would be
running all the time serving your network, just like your router and
connectivity devices.

If you would like to read up on the advantages of that arrangement,
search around for the advantages of running a home server and how to do
it and why it would best be linux.

Hi Mike,

I agree with you.
How can I not agree with you when you use logic like that.

When I worked with Marek for months on the perfect VPN setup, we dealt with
making those kinds of logical decisions, for example.

While I have to drop to the 'childish' level to confront the bully trolls,
I'm always logical with you since you're always logical with me.

The facts is...
Up until now, I had never _needed_ a full-time server.
Yet, as you noted, the problem set I'm trying to solve, literally begs for
a Linux server.

I agree with you.
(Although I didn't know that when I started this quest a week or so ago.)

Once I decided to device a simple KISS cross-platform calendaring, and now,
simple KISS cross-platform passwd management, then (and only then) did the
issue of the lack of a full-time Linux server even come up as an issue.

Hence, I agree on three logical points (since you & I are logical adults):
1. The problem set literally begs for a 24/7 server solution, and,
2. For "servers", Linux is "generally" the way to go, and,
3. Setting up a reliable "free" 24/7 Linux server is pretty easy, where,
4. Linux servers can be made out of almost anything handy.

That is, almost any handy computer can be that Linux server
o Old laptops
o Old desktops
o Even a $35 raspberry pi

And, as you can tell from my photos, I re-use all the hardware I have handy
- where - embarrassingly - this is the kind of rats nests I end up with:
 <http://www.bild.me/bild.php?file=1180159aqp03.jpg>

You can see a switch and a couple of POEs and the wall outlets I wired
myself (the floor to ceiling below literally has four feet between them,
which is an ungodly waste of potentially useful storage space).

Yup. I agree. How can I not agree when you're giving logical advice.

In my defense, I didn't realize how critical a home Linux server would be
for such basic things until I started the quest of setting up a simple KISS
home cross-platform solution. Ubuntu 18.04 even plays nicely with iOS far
better than does Windows (since Ubuntu treats the iOS device, essentially,
as an auto-mounted USB stick of sorts).

> Your 'favorite' Win machines or partitions could be turned on or off

> connectivity devices.

Yup.
Best best, in the short term, is one of the old laptops (most of them have
dead batteries, which aren't worth replacing), so they would "act" like
desktops. Also the raspberry pi might be a decent learning project.

> If you would like to read up on the advantages of that arrangement,
> search around for the advantages of running a home server and how to do
> it and why it would best be linux.

Hi Mike,

I have no doubt, at this point in time, of the veracity of your logic.
1. Linux servers are the way to go
2. Linux servers can handle the CalDAV & WebDav server roll
3. Linux servers can be made out of almost anything lying around

For now, I'm going to complete the original task, which is formulate a
working sharing setup - and then when I have it all working - I'll more
strongly consider the role of adding a Linux server out of spares lying
around.

One bit of "emotional" logic Mike, is that when I start a project, I intend
to solve the problems, so I keep going in as straight a line as I can, so
that I can solve it first - before I move on to other things like adding a
Linux server.

My approach will be simple:
1. First I'll get it working as planned (I'm almost done, actually)
2. Then I'll work in _improving_ the process (e.g., with a Linux server)

Hi Jason Betts,

By now you should have re-read that article a few times.
Maybe the point of that article will have sunk in by the third read.
But it doesn't seem like the information _has_ sunk in to your brain.

The problem is that I can't make you comprehend the obvious.
I just can't.

Your brain is going to have to perceive what is "new" in that database.
You can claim it's old information - but it contains new information.

I'm not sure I have the skills to explain something that obvious to you.

I'm not sure where you got your data from, but the article I referred to
was dated January 17 (which is a couple days ago) and I also read other
articles which provided more information, all of which is current news.

What's new is a "series" of events, some of which are certainly old,
but others of which are stated in the article as being new occurrences
(such as the momentary exposure), and others of which are the access for
free to all of us (the web site for the search).

Nonetheless, you can continue to act like a child, Jason Betts.
By you acting like a child - we all have to suffer your idiocy.
But explaining the obvious to you gets us nowhere, Jason Betts.

You _always_ act like a child - and I am confronting you frontally on that.

I chose that particular article out of many simply because it was from a
highly respected entity (i.e., Consumers Union), where I clearly said in
the opening post that there was no need to "delve into the details".

You have to remember, Jason Betts, that your post added zero value.
Your post seemed, to me, to be ill intended - with malice on your part.
Your post seemed, to me, to be intended to be a waste of our time.

Hence I responded to your purposefully unhelpful post as I did.
If you want to CHANGE your attitude - then please do.

I will respond, as always, as if I'm a mirror of your perceived intent.

> you come here abusing technical terms like "passwd" which is not a

Hi Jason Betts,

I know you and I know something about you.
o You _always_ act like a child, Jason Betts.
o You _never_ intend anything but malice, Jason Betts.

You never add a single iota of technical value to any thread, Jason Betts.
You _love_ to play childishly silly semantic games, Jason Betts.

*With that in mind, you now say I'm _abusing_ the term" "passwd".*

Jesus Christ, Jason Betts.
Do you have any other silly semantic games you want to play?

If I mail you a child's coloring book - will that keep you occupied enough?
(Anything to keep you off of Usenet will benefit everyone else.)

> whateva.

What a child you prove to be, Jason Betts.
I don't have to prove that - you prove it yourself.

> tldr.
What a child you prove to be, Jason Betts.
Your own words prove that you own the mind of a child, Jason Betts.

Look Jason Betts,
If you want to bully a thread, then expect to be confronted, Jason Betts.
You act, always, like a child, Jason Betts.

Don't blame me for simply pointing out two things, Jason Betts:
1. You _never_ post with purposefully helpful intent, Jason Betts.
2. Hence, you always _waste_ everyone's time with your drivel.

What you don't like, Jason Betts, is that I confront you bullies.
Go and play your silly childish semantic games elsewhere.

We are actually trying to accomplish something with this thread.
1. People can see whether they've been pwned
2. People can set up an encrypted database on all platforms
3. What we're working on now, is passing the MASTER file

This solution of being able to share a shared file on a home network
(whether that shared file is a copy or not is immaterial), is a very useful
capability which almost all home networks would benefit from.

Your purposefully unhelpful posts, Jason Betts, detract from that goal.
