"Designed to run on minimal hardware, Elive is very much a passion
project of its leader, Samuel F Baggen. Based on Debian, the first
version took a bow in 2005. The second stable version made an
appearance in 2010 and it has been a long eight years for the third
stable version to become available.
Elive has an impressively low bar to entry, with hardware requirements
for the distribution coming in at 256 MB RAM and a 500 MHz CPU,
meaning that some very elderly silicon is theoretically going to be
able to enjoy the highly polished Enlightenment desktop.(...)
While 3.0.0 is free, the voluntary donations model, alas, has not
worked (...) Which is, alas, so often the case where free software is
concerned. Somebody, somewhere has to pay the developers. If no one

The developer is struggling with the/his 'expense' of distributing his 
distro.  When people started dl/ing the latest, it started costing him, 
so he is beseeching users to donate to dl.

I don't know how DW chooses which distros to provide torrents for, but I 
haven't yet found a torrent for elive.

Torrent availability would solve some elive dl cost pressure.

There's a nice vid for elive3 at its website, as well as some promotion 
for its lightweight features on minimal old hardware.

My first two attempts to boot elive on my old nvidia hardware didn't 
work out.  It got pretty far, but it seemed to have lost its way to 
finding some of its files.  That was on a yumi multiboot USB with F28; 
I'll give it a shot on a USB all by itself, first trying rufus and if 
that doesn't work I'll follow its advice about using usbwriter.

Elive3 runs ok on some newer hardware booted from a rufus usb.  That is 
a very unfamiliar environment to me.  It always makes me a little crazy 
if I can't fix/change the clock from UTC.

I finally got it done with a command dpkg-reconfigure tzdata, but trying 
to figure out how Brother Baggen organized things is quite different.

It is rumored that E3 is based on Deb8, but inxi says it is 7.11 but 
with a 3.16 kernel.  On my ATI/Radeon graphics system, it says that it 
is using ati drivers not radeon but it recognizes my card and asked me 
if I wanted to use radeon for over 4000 which I said I did, having an 
8470D ATI/Radeon.

I don't really mind that mac-y/docky look, but I don't find it 
particularly light on resource consumption on my system with 8 gigs of 
ram at 1400.  Maybe it would use less on a system with less resources.

I wasn't impressed with the earlier Elive and I'm not enthusiastic about 
this one.  I don't see why it is often described as lightweight and 
beautiful.  It ought to be lighter if it is going to use OpenBox + 
Enlightenment.

Hmm.  Now I've got it running fglrx which is apparently the proprietary 
AMD Catalyst and synaptic says that it is 15.9 which is almost as new as 
the 15.12 at AMD.  Synaptic also confirms that the Deb repos are 
wheezy/7.  My understanding is that Deb 7 or 8 can run Catalyst but 
current Ub/Mint can't for some reason.

Usually when I boot such as Mint or Ub on that hardware it uses radeon 
driver.

Elive's boot parameters command is to blacklist radeon, radeonhd and 
some other popular video drivers.

Jesse Smith reviewed E3 quite negatively at today's DW feature:

Bodhi Linux which offer a nicer Enlightenment experience, similarly low 
resource requirements and supported packages."


He was most distressed by the unsupported kernel and old default browsers.
